|
|
Every day, I see this banner on my way to work. The boss of my Hagwan went to them and told them that it was offensive to me. When I came home from work, the sign was still there. It is not visible from the street. Only a small enclave in a small complex in a small town well outside Buson, Seoul, or Daegu can see this. I couldn't fit my political baggage on the plane, and I have never, ever, ever flag-waved here. This requires a proportionate response. Myself, I could have a company of United States solders and KATUSA translators rotating through this area for less than 2m won a week and I can keep it up until we all get arrested.
They've been told once. Now I'm going to tell them.
What do you suggest?

How about telling them, "it's a free country, so you have the right to hang that from the veranda of your own apartment." Sounds fair to me. |

You know, the only people who can respond to this post with anything helpful are those who who can read and understand Korean, which is about 5% of the posters here.
You obviously understand it, so why not include a translation along with your post there? |

Amen. I'm sick of the "check this out! Can you believe it?" with no translation. A common type of post on these boards.
Okay, we're so impressed cuz you can read Korean. Wow. You're so multi-cultural. Now tell us what it bloody says. |

Freedom Of Speech, baby.
Did not the US / UN send young soldiers to fight and die to provide South Koreans with that very right?
Does not the US / UN maintain a force of soldiers here to preserve and maintain that very right?
Would you not fight to preserve that right in your own country? |

Why not just wait till July when US beef starts rolling in. Drag your crappy little Weber grill over right under their patio and fire it up. Don't forget your lawn chair, some sun screen and a sun hat (American flag is not optional at this picnic). While they watch put all the fixins on your burger and then take a bigggg ol bite with a smile on your face. Let the juices roll down your chin as you gaze up at the gawkers (the whole family and some of the neighbors will be present by this time for sure) Then, do what any American patriot would do. Fall to the ground and start flopping around like you are having a seizure while screaming "엄마, 엄마!" I will pay money if you can get a friend to take a video of the expressions on their faces.
Koreans want to turn this into a circus...why not be a good neighbor and give them what they want. |

Sorry. "This family opposes the import of mad cows" or something of that nature. I've only been in-country for three weeks and I figured that much out, but that's the long and short of it. |

Wow, projecting your own insecurities much? It's pretty basic Korean. |

So I'm thinking I'm going to get the biggest fscking american flag I can find and hang it from my window.
Also, the American beef imports: Classy choice. If I can barbeque out on July 4th with a big sign saying "This beef is American. The buns are American. The cheese is American. Y'all come get some." That would be the gold standard. |

I wouldn't let it bother you. Down here in deep south Jeolla, the local Government and civic groups have placed anti-US beef posters around town, I should have taken a picture of them but they're par for course down here when some 'controversy' erupts.
It's a free country and I have no problem with individuals making posters, however stupid their views, but it is a bit scary when taxpayer funding goes into this malarkey. |

Let's say you're Canadian, and you move into a small town. You start working at a local resale shop. The bar next door puts out a sign that says "STOP CANADIANS FROM STEALING ALL OUR JOBS" three weeks after you move in.
Offended now?
Right in your face.
Right on your way to work in the morning.
Yes, the sign is about you.
We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect us. |

Below is a link to an interesting article where an American lawyer (well respected for his mastery of the Korean language) discusses the issues of American beef, Korean emotionalism and the cost to the Korean economy. Not that it is really anything new or that it will surprise any rationale person.

dude seriously.
you found it "offensive" to you?
only women find things "offensive" and then whine about it.
This works in the US but will not work anywhere else because the rest of the world doesn't buy into this new age sensitivity bullshit and theren't hordes of rapacious lawyers trying to make a buck any way then can.
men laugh such shit off.
since I believe in free speech, they have every right to hang what they want from their wina dow.. and you have a right to hang whatever you want out of yours.
how about a huge flag of Kim Jung Il?
