Local tastes nothing. Is this South Korea (free) or North Korea (dictatorship)? And by the way it is NOT an illegal activity. I see a lot of things that offend me but hey.......
it's part of the price of a "free" society.
Had one guy come up to me and say, "We don't do that here". I replied, "Good, then don't ever do it!"
If any don't like it they can lump it!!!!! |
Uhhh... last I saw, nobody arrested you or threatened you for doing it. People just told you it wasn't what Koreans do, and they are right, they don't go shirtless in public areas. So, why did you come on here? Just to get everybody to agree with you? |

I remember living near the Blue House several years ago and regularly going jogging on the streets and up on the mountain behind. I didn't go shirtless, but ran in a grey tanktop.
One day one of the security guys in front of the Blue House called me over and told me it was not appropriate to wear just a tank top and shorts hear the Blue House. He was very polite and friendly and I was also pretty civil with my reply, but it did piss me off a bit. |

I remember a couple of years ago being up in Jongno walking around when some foreigner comes jogging down the street and turns onto the busiest street in Jongno 2-ga (the one with all the bars and restaurants that runs parallel to the main road) wearing short, short shorts and no shirt. He was also hairy. The Koreans around us were making so many comments and were pretty much disgusted. Might have had something to do with it possibly being the most inappropriate street to be doing that on though. |
I've seen the same guy doing that before on more than one occasion.
Cultural sensitivities aside, it's just totally inappropriate to be jogging shirtless and sweaty on Friday night at 11 PM on one of the busiest pedestrian thoroughfares I've ever stepped foot on. For shame.
Now in Jinhae? Don't see too much of a problem with it. Pretty sparse from what I remember. |

they maybe saying - look at the rude monkey... so hairy... no shame... |

Nah, they were just against sports, any kind of sports that makes you sweat and is actually effective. |

Who cares what the Lees and Nancys think-good on you for not caring one bit about them and their absolutely worthless negative opinions on running shirtless. |

You can do what you want, of course, but I'd advise against it. Is it that trying to wear a tank top?
Look at it this way. Nude beaches are perfectly acceptable in some parts of the world. That doesn't mean I'd be justified going to a family beach in Texas and stripping down completely.
That may be an extreme example, but you get the gist of it. When in Rome, after all. |

I think it works this way here:
If you're shirtless but built, then Koreans are just going to admire your physique. If you're not built better than the average Korean man, then they are going to give you those looks and comments like the previous poster described, especially in the snobbier areas of Seoul.

I come from California, in May we usually try to get a tan for the beach season in summer. One, we gradually tan so we don't get sunburn/cancer all at once when we hit the beach. Two, some of usl like to tan if we're into body building.
Now, I'm quite shy and can't run around with my shirt off. So, I was looking for some place to tan without *tons* of fricking people around.
In L.A. I would go to the beach, put a towel down and Venice and relax, and no one would stress.
That doesn't exist here in Cheong-Ju South Korea. After I work out in the gym, I would go to a sort of secluded crappy basketball court (uneven sand on the court so you get unven bounces) and play there with my shirt off.
And most of the time it was cool, but once this Korean old man told me to put my shirt on. I didn't argue, I put my shirt on and left.
So I gave up on trying to get a tan. I'm not gonna argue with these people. They're hateful in a way, the older generation. But that's the way it is. I'm not gonna worry about it.
Every time I think about these Koreans I think about The Dude. F*** it man. |

I had these issues in Caracas, Venezuela, where the local populace hit the beaches religiously on the weekends, yet it was considered very uncouth to appear topless/shirtless anywhere outside of the beach.
I jogged late at night, sometimes with a tank, other times topless, but it was late enough where few people notices and would say anything about it (in fact no one said anything though I got some curious looks) I also jogged in a very residential area.. not a main street. That would never fly.
re tanning.. there was a communal area behind the building I lived in where I would go and catch some rays many times during my 2 hour lunch break... and nobody really complained except one bitch who complained to my landlady, who laughed it off and couldn't give a rat's ass. But the bitch was persistent and I tried to hide/minimize myself as best as I could not wanting to cause any trouble. oh yea.. one of the reasons used was that children sometimes came out to play there. Yea.. SO??????
anyways.. here similar issue, except unlike Venezuelans, they don't even go tanning to the beach.. I talked to my landlord about tanning issue and I am fortunate to have a very large athletic park near my house.. with tons of room and places I can essentially "hide" away from most passerbys and Koreans that may go/come there. That's what I did on Sunday. I also have the small local parks where many Koreans go to hang out.. milfs and their mids.. adjummas.. old men.. everyone. In those places no way no how could I get away with taking my top off (and yes, I'm hairy too)
obviously it's clear I could never get away with taking my top off on a major street as well.
but I'm lucky.. if I time things correctly here and go jogging late enough. I can probably jog around that public track (nice track too, no cement wrecking you knees) topless as well.
that's why in many ways I'm glad not to be in Seoul but in the boonies. with the athletic park/fields nearby.
If I lived in Seoul I would think that areas such as the running paths and workout areas by the river. etc would be places where one might get away with going topless. I'd try, anyways.. |

You know what the funny thing is? Once you get a good tan, you look a lot less hairy. It's a sort of blend effect. |

If I wanna get some sun on the body I find a rooftop (the higher the better) where noone will bother me.
I used to lay out drinking beer while making my phone calls on the top of a high-rise helicopter pad (never saw a chopper - big surprise) next to Lake Park in Ilsan. Wasn't my building, but whatever.
Never bothered once. In fact, never saw anybody. I recommend finding a place like that. |
