What are the pros and cons of the people in Korea assuming I am an American soldier (I have a very athletic build) when in fact I am simply a hagwon slave |
It means you may have very short hair cut, tattooes on arms/legs, wearing flea market quality T-shirt, physically huge with dumb looking face ( I am sure you are not ) etc...etc
If you don't want to look like a soldier, give attention to your clothes, wear clothes intellectually
Wear nice suit one day, then tell to korean you are a soldier, they will say " you don't look like a soldier " |

You may be on something here, friend. This is actually what I've suspected for quite a long time. That's the reason why she always makes huge portions of my favorite Korean foods and brings beer on her way from work. It's like her life mission is to make me as fat as possible!
So it looks like I have to hit the gym again! I'm already on a tight diet and have increased cardio a lot. I'm now in Finland and will return back to Korea in few months... time to start lifting some "serious" weights once again. Dang! |

Don't Finnish DNA and genes lend itself to being a big bastard anyway? All the good strongmen you see are Finns - you missed a trick by not taking up rugby league as your national sport! |

Same here...been here 2 years and have gotten it since the 1st day. Even some of the other Westerners don't know till I tell them.
Cons:
*people will avoid you (be it fear, disgust, or plain disrespect)
*many of the girls just simply dont find it attractive
*people always ask if you are one
*you have to hear them talk about how Koreans don't like the soldiers so much
*being asked why you want to look like that
Pros:
*the older women love the soldier look
*Koreans always try to show off to you at the gym (entertainment)
*you feel a sense of pride when you see out of shape long haired hippies
*if you growl when you get angry, people get scared
*Koreans will generally be intrigued about your shape |
For the most part Korean women like clean cut looking guys. I think the U.S. soldier look has gotta be so much better than the cloned Korean nerd
with bad greasy hair and dorky glasses. |

The Finns got a lot of foreign DNA from our beloved Swedish and Russian overlords during the centuries. Maybe some kind of a mutation did happen? And these days we get even more foreign DNA from abroad due to increased immigration and travel. Both of which, in my opinion, are great things!
Since the ground is frozen solid most of the year, we eat a lot of meat and milk products and get a lot of protein in our diet = big 'n tall lads and lasses a plenty!
I think that the main national sport is ice hockey right now. What's hockey other than rugby on skates theses days? |

I"m growing my hair back.
I get asked if I'm a soldier a lot. I've crossed paths with the MP plenty.
In my experience most Koreans don't like soldiers, and I'm quick to point out that I'm English. But it seems most Koreans just assume you're American. It seems to be the first question they ask; "Meygookin?" Also, I'm tired of the dirty looks I get in the street from the Ajosshis.
Don't assume that it's because you are athletic that people mistake you for a soldier. I've met plenty of soldiers who aren't in particularly good shape and I'm not exactly stacked myself. There are some absolute beasts knocking around in Tin Pan 1 though. |

Here's an entertaining idea: the next time some Korean male says he doesn't like people in the military, ask him, "Weren't you in the military?" |

Then you would just look like a moron because it would be beyond obvious he meant the US military. |

The combat uniform is old fashioned. I believe they are phasing this uniform out. The soldiers that still have them will wear them until they are worn out they will not be replaced. The langauge on the sign behind him is Russian. It's an old picture of an obese American soldier waiting for his juicy Russian lady friend. He's a definite walking ATM machine.
I don't think it's a big deal having short hair. Mine is a borderline skinhead look now. By mistake I've walked by large anti- American demonstrations.
I even walked through one of the biggest after those two girls got crushed
by an American tank. I didn't feel any threat. I did however get out of there pretty quickly.
Koreans are more likely to frown on the opposite style. The long shaggy hair with a beard. |

Mines even shorter. What's wrong with it? It's neat and tidy. It's versatile
you can look good with a suit and wear casual clothes too. You can wear
DM's with it and fit in with the Skunk Hell crowd in Hongdae.
If you wear a suit with it you'll have no problems landing a good job at an interview. |
