What age group do you teach?

I taught kindi and caught the plague on a weekly basis.

I started using hand sanitizer and wiping down their desks and doors with alcohol. My sickness to health ratio improved by leaps and bounds.

I've resolved that if I get one more serious illness (I was actually inpatient in the hospital for a stomach infection early this month), I have to start looking at leaving South Gyeonggi sooner than anticipated.

And now my health's starting to slip again, the the point where I probably need to make a two hour trip to severance hospital this weekend and talk to a doctor who actually understands me. (Not that the Fine people at Pyeongtaek Good Morning aren't great; but I can't't explain my symptoms to them...)

I'm taking vitamins and supplements. I'm eating healthy. I've even stopped eating the cafeteria food in favor of my own bagged lunches. I'm exercising when I can, but am always too fatigued to exercise. I was a VERY healthy person back in Minneapolis, without the aid of vitamins a healthy diet, or even that much exercise. I think the problem has to be my external enviroment. I haven't traveled much, but Gyeonggi province is the filthiest most pollutted palce I've ever seen.

I like Korea enough to want to stay if possible, so I'm looking at my other options.

Has anyone else had experience with this? Can you escape contaminants and pollutants and get better health if you go down South? If so, what are the best places to go to?

I'm considering Jeju, Pohang or Yeosu.

Is it possible to find a healthy environment in Korea?

my smartass comment would be to start eating more kimchi.

the more serious one would be - well I suppose kimchi can't hurt.

It's only the beginning of my third week here, but I still don't quite get the hubbub over health/sneezing issues I have read here for a while.

and I am in one of the most polluted parts of GEPIK, in fact because it's an industrial area.. I receive an extra 100K a month, it's treated like working in the boonies.

and though I definitely notice the polution and for the first time ever can sometimes almost "taste" the suphur in the air (and it's always at night, never during the day) I can't say I've noticed any adverse affects as of yet. I've even jogged in the crap. My throat may have been burning more than usual at the end.. so I did what the Koreans do... horked up a big loogie and spit the foul air/saliva out of my throat.

obviously feeling sick and like shit sucks... I hope you find a solution/resolution to your problems.

btw.. ever traveled outside of Korea for say a vacation etc? do you immediately feel better?

Hand sanitizer has helped me alot to reduce the number of colds/times I get sick.

For any age group, hand sanitizer is a help. You can't use it too frequently (unless your hands start to crack). This is a culture that was only very recently introduced to the germ theory of disease. Many people here still believe sickness comes directly from the weather, dust, or because "you are weak." Many school and public bathrooms dont even have sinks, soap, or toilet paper. Many people don't wash their hands.

Also don't accept any food, toys, etc. from the children unless it's absolutely necessary. Sanitize immediately after.

Don't pick them up, touch them, or get in the general direction of thier breathing unless it's absolutely necessary. Sanitize immediately after.

After touching anything in the classroom or school, sanitize immediately after.

After using public transportation, sanitize immediately after.

A HEPA air filter in you apartment may help.

And of course....

Exercise, eat well, sleep well, and suppliments shouldn't hurt (except too much Iron).

Pohang is also a polluted cesspool.

Have you witnessed her using the toilet without using any toilet paper? I STILL don't get that.

Christ, I've never ever used hand sanitizer in my life.

I think a lot of Americans are loony over various "germs". You don't see people in other countries dying en masse or even getting sick , do you?

I'm more of a Nietzche guy, what doesn't kill me makes me stronger, but I suppose if someone is having problems, then by all means, try everything.

like i said, a 4 year old was playing with her *beep*, another kid eating his snot and id imagine after shitting they dont wash their hands. Many of them smell of urine, and most stick their hand down their pants and play with their dick, if thats cool with you then fine, but i dont appreciate them climbing over me and touching me

Start checking the little stores that sell women's products. The more upscale ones. Look hard and you will find it.

I always use hand sanitizer. Seems like when I don't, I am more prone to feeling under the weather.

And to those that discount the "germ" threat, it is obvious that you should do more research. Perhaps a class in micro-bio would do the trick.

Wow!! Obviously an educated man on the subject. Tell us more about other developing countries and the effects of their sanitary awareness, or rather lack there of. Don't forget to compare how many vaccinations you have to get prior to visiting those countries.
