I think you mean ssamjang.

HTH

If she were Korean, she would have figured it out. Ssamjang is dwengjang mixed with gochujang. Didn't you know that?

In Washington DC, NYC, and LA, most if not all Korean BBQ joints are owned by Koreans since there is a large Korean population.

I found it funny that in those areas, most Japanese Sushi places were owned by Koreans too.

Didn't you? If you did, why didn't you ask for ssamjang, genius?

PS - However you romanize it, there's no 'ng' in the first syllable of doenjang/dwenjang.

Just goto the dak-galbi next to Honest Eds. The food quality in Koreatown south is OK. Better to go up near Sheppard for better cuisine, but a bigger dent in your wallet.

Who's the one splitting hairs? I said you should have asked for ssamjang, which contains doenjang. But you don't seem to be aware of the fact. If you were, you would have asked for it in the first place, instead of placing blame on the waitress, who, in your own words, would have understood your blunder were she Korean.

Dude, you asked for doenjang at a Korean BBQ restaurant. Even if if she spoke fluent Korean she would have thought you were asking for jjigae, because what special brand of dumbass who's lived in Korea for more than a year calls ssamjang doenjang?

The ironic thing about your post is that you criticize the romanization of bibimbap, yet you incorrectly romanized doenjang as "dwengjang," asshat.

Not true.

In my first year I always calld it doenjang because that's what someone taught me (I think), and they always brought me ssamjang.

I think a Korean would know exactly what you mant if you were eating galbi and asked for doenjang.

Don't mess with the whitest white boy that Toronto has to offer. You don't want a piece of my yellow-fevered fury, as I'll turn your ass into bibimbap.

There's more than enough room for two beta males, you guys. Settle down.

Okay, so why would mindmetoo, a Korean vet, ask for doenjang rather than ssamjang? He supposedly knows what the correct "paste" is, so why ask for the wrong one?

As per usual, a know-it-all on all things Korean has allowed his fingers to speak before his brain, and his ignorance toward Korean cuisine, rather than highlighting the mistake of the offending waitress, has proven his own ignorance instead.

Whatever, dude. You lived in Korea for how many years and still don't know the difference between doenjang and ssamjang?

That's pathetic. Did you ever leave your apartment while you were here?

I had the exact opposite happen to me. It was a week for me to get the exact pronunciation correct. If it wasn't perfect they had no idea what I was talking about (even with hand signals)
Confused

..edit... I am going to a meat restaurant tonight, and will test it out. I will let you know tomorrow the result.

This argument is stupid.

Koreans serve 된장 with 갈비 quite often, not just 쌈장. At least in my neck of the woods.
