Why does it seem like the foreigner here is always last to know whats going on? Case in point: I was told today to go down to finance and sign for my expense account credit card! I was also asked why I have yet to do this in spite of it being ready for over a month!

I went through all, and I do mean all, of my company related e-mail and memos- nothing. I asked how was I supposed to know this, am I missing something? It turns out that the team leader put in for my card and never told me. IGO!

So now I have a shiny new credit card with a insanely high limit, burning a hole in my wallet! I go out with clients 2 or 3 times some weeks and thankfully, I have never had to pay as others from my team were there. The company likes me to go out because:

A- I am the token foreigner (and damn lucky to be that guy)
B- I am told that I can drink well. Errr I think thats a good thing.
C- I can be used as an excuse for not going to room salons, as the fact that I wont go to one has already been established beyond any doubt.

I am not complaining about getting this perk at all! It would have been nice to know last month but hey, better late then never!

Tonight Im gonna party like its 1999!!!

What kind of company is it you work for that would need you to have an expense account ? ESL ? What kind of job/teaching do you do that you would go out to dinner with clients and so forth requiring it ?

Just curious

I feel like answering the first question like Ed Norton did as Jack in Fight Club !

A major one!

I would have to be a crack head to post where I work and what I do here. For the record I am no longer teaching English in Korea . I derive no income at all from any language training here. Suffice to say I work at a Chaebol, and no, I wont say which one. The mods here know that my company has been named in attacks against me. They have killed the posts and I am grateful. However. in my past I have worked here (on an E-2) in Hogwons.

Someone posted The 10 rules of working in Korea (or something like it) a few days back. That pretty much describes corporate business culture here. Meeting with clients is EXPECTED here. Hey Swissjames! Do you have to go out as well?
Those of us not currently in the ESL game here are almost in another world as far as work dynamics goes. I was planning a series of articles titled At the Chaebol today to post on a friends website. Perhaps if there is interest here I will post it here as well.

I have to agree if I read that right. Most of my friends are teachers & while my wife runs 'our' study room; I am not a teacher either.

I am preparing an ebook explaining how to work outside the ESL industry and make real cash. Not to be insulting however 1.9-2.1 is rather a low salary for a native English speaker in this country in my opinion.

I think that depends. When you can make 2.5mil for teaching less than 20hrs a week...where can you make that much for those kinds of hours back home? If I had the qualifications to be a lawyer or computer programmer or doctor or other high paying per hour job sure...but most reg. jobs, no way.

lush72 - I would be interested to read your articles. I once interviewed at a job that didn't involve teaching or ESL, was at a very big Korean company...sadly the monthly salary was low, the hours extremely high and the location sucked, so I passed. I would be interested to hear about some of your experiences. BTW can you tell us, how is your Korean? Curious if you are really good at it or not.

You are obviously in need of a high-paid consultant on this matter. Book me on a flight to Seoul with that new card and we'll do some 'cogitating'...

JESUS ... you have one pathetic little problem there hotshot. I ask a simple question out of curiosity sake and you go balistic. I don't give a crap what the name of your company is or anything of the sort. I couldn't give a crap if my life depended on it. I ask a simple question to get the jist of what you're talking about and you have a stroke over the question.

I have no clue what this company of yours is, you didn't much explain a thing in the original post and I ask a simple thing and you ....

Forget it, you people aren't worth the effort to come here; that is, with such a lack of moderation over "discussion"

Er, you need to sit down and reread my reply post again. I dont think you understood it. I thought I answered you question humorously. Obviously you dont think so.

Why not trying to relax more, lonelyontherok? Get out, see the country and meet new people? Perhaps then you wouldnt be so lonely! Isolation coupled with a foreign environment seems to have a negative effect on your reading comprehension skills. But relax, that problem seems rampant on these boards. Lonely, you are not alone in this! There are other people like you here! Reach out to them!

Chaebol are the huge corporations that own 90% of Korea.

Such as:

Samsung
LG
Hyundai
Daewoo/Kia
SK group
Lotte Group
Kyobo Group
Posco

and some others that I am sure someone else can add.

Didn't Hyundai snap up Daewoo, Ssang-Yong, and Kia some years back or have I got my mergers mixed up?
