Guess you missed the "polite protests" back in the 80's or the usual summer protests over the last few years.

Seriously. It's like when a kid tries to go all out on a teacher and the teacher just sits there... No, you take that baton you have, break a knee or two and then if they still keep fighting, take a few steps back and let them crawl after you.

I'm assuming you're being sarcastic here... if you really think they're the same situation, you're on crack.

Hitting students: not cool
Beating the crap out of protestors: awesome

Police in Korea are mostly people dodging the military (you can do 4 years of police instead of 2 military).

So, they are primarily young guys.

How could they possibly lay hands on an elder?
How could they possibly fine an elder for their behavior?

Let's clarify...

Beating peaceful protestors: not so cool
Beating a protestor who lays a hand on a cop: acceptable.

I saw a police car stop by a car (Grandeur) parked outside a load of restaurants. The police put a fine on the car for it being illegally parked and as soon as the officer decided to go back to his car, a big fat, 50 year old, drunk adjosshi walked out of the restaurant to his car. He was swaying in the wind probably to the copious amounts of soju he drank. He got to his car and looked at his ticket. The cop just stood outside his car watching this guy and then decided to approach him. I guess they were talking about how his car was parked but was the civvy nice to him. Not a chance.

He started to shout and get irate when I child wants candy and can't get any, you know the type of guy. Anyways, pulled his sticky parking ticket of the windshield and proceeded to rip it up and pushed the cop away. The cop started to tell him that he shouldn't park where he did and the 50 year old tw@t then started getting real loud and physical. He pushed the cop out the way stumbled to his car and drove off. What did the cop do? Nothing.

The police man cancelled the parking ticket and then walked back to his car but this got me thinking, how can a drunk have a go at a policeman? How can someone who is a breach of the peace not be arrested? How can someone public member treat the police with such disrespect?

Only in Korea. I just hoped that the guy driving had an accident due to the manner he was acting and the obvious amount of alcohol he consumed.

A few months ago there were rumours about an older Korean dude getting the crap kicked out of him by the Toronto police... you just KNOW that it was probably the exact same situation you just described.

I saw a scuffle on the sidewalk outside a little hof involving two 50+ very drunk adjosshis. Two very young "police men" walking the beat stopped to check things out (the old adjumma, presumably the hof owner, was screaming out of the hof door for some sort of help). One of the "police men" confronted the drunk adjosshis, and guess what he got? A big 'ol slap across the face, that's what! And you'll never guess what he did in response to that! Nothing!!! He put his hands behind his back and hung his head low while the adjosshi continued to scream at him and slap him upside the head. The other"police man" stood and watched. Eventually I took off. Absolutely unbelievable. Shocking. The police force here is a joke. Period.

It's pretty random where the young draftees go. And I think it's more like 30 months instead of the 24, or so, months you do in the army. Although, I would sure hate being place in the riot police.

The guys doing their military service as a riot policeman are not "dodging" their service. Being nothing more than a boy scout with a baton and shield is a lot worse than being in the Army. I've known several students who have said they would never want to get ASSIGNED (they do not choose to do riot service) to such duties. In the past, I don't know if they still do this, they assigned troublemakers to riot police duty.

Troublemakers should definitely be assigned to police duty. That way they can uh.....hit people.

The police used to be bad assed here in the 70s and 80s. That is why they are pansies now. Under the dictators that ran the country the police would kick the crap out of those that opposed them or looked at them in a strange way. In the early 90s when the military leaders stopped getting the position of president people called for a police reform. No more bribes and no more violence. Unfortunently, this has gone to far the other way now. The cops have to be able to keep order and stop people from degrading them. A happy balance needs to be struck, but I don't think that is going to happen in Korea anytime soon.

Outside our school we have seen a number of struggles between sidewalk vendors and HID (Hidden Inspections Dept), and I've had conflicting reports on their legal standing as to whether or not they are a "police division" or if they are simply operating independently.

They don't seem to be police affiliated...because when they come around to bust the local sidewalk vendors that some of the building and business owners here in Dongtan don't want cluttering their business entrances...they never resolve a situation without a fight...vandalism...or an all out scene and protest.

Once...this vendor stripped down to his boxers...climbs on the HID van...and smears pajeon mix all over the van's windsheild...classic!!

Only then did the actaul police show up. They were witness to multiple assaults...traffic and businesses in the area were affected for over an hour...personal property of the vendors had been damaged...the police couldn't contain the situation nor did they detain anyone once it ended.

If it had been me out there protesting or smearing stuff on a Koreans van...I wonder how efficient the police force would've been then??!!
