I sometimes dream about buing a road bike when I get home. I think I'd like a Honda Shadow.

What would you buy, priced reasonably.

I'd find a 1984 Honda XL100 like I used to burn around my parent's fields and down the railroad track with. Smallest road bike you could buy.

How would these do on old mountain roads? Perhaps with a passenger?

Depends..

What would your purpose be? Commuting, weekend fun, long trips ?

Also, how much experience do you have?

I'm looking to buy a 2008 Suzuki DRZ-400 when I get back home. That looks like a really fun machine and I like the price.

Some commuting, weekend cross-state trips. . .

I'm not an experienced motorcyclist. I've been a cyclist for many years and have a good sense of machines, physics, gear ratios; but, I'd not likely want too much bike.

This is a road I wanna ride. . . http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=ZO48BJD7wvM

Looks like a nice road to drive.. some of the ones in the Korean mountains are fun too, nice and twisty.

I'd recommend something like my current bike (Honda CB400SF) if you're relatively inexperienced and want an all-rounder. Even still, I'd get some lessons or practice on a smaller bike first.. I remember when I first got this one and thought the power was insane compared with my previous 125 v-twin - but like many things, I'm now wanting more! Smile

I am in the same boat. I can't wait to get home and get a bike. You said you were interested in taking a passenger on mountain roads so remember that the small bikes work with little power because they weigh next to nothing. If you and your passenger nearly double the weight of the bike (or you're just a big guy like me) it will cut your performance. I recommend getting something 750 to 1000cc. Suzuki makes an 800cc called the Marauder (at least I think that's the name, someone help me.) Its dirt cheap and should be a good started bike.

If my wife would let me buy a Ducati, I would be happy for the rest of my life.

Awesome little bike! I learned on one of these. And for $6k brand new, you can't beat the price with a stick!

Given realistic finances? Honda Shadow 800cc or 1100cc

Unlimited resources? Customized Harley, possibly with a 1200cc Sportster Engine. Nothing bigger is ever needed.

I'm debating between a Harley VRSCDX or trading in my BMW for a Mercedes CLK550 Coupe. (Look at all the money you save by not dating Korean girls!)
