|

Alright, this is not a rant but an honest assessment of the people who more increasingly are complaining about not being able to find a job.
It seems people based in other countries are finding it difficult to find a job here in Korea. I feel sorry for them as the situation is tough and who wants to work at Wal-Mart, Starbucks,etc...
Why don't you just hop on a plane and come over. Look I know the airfare is expensive but how much is it going to cost you to sit there and wait and wait and wait and when you finally land one it might be a really crap one. All the time you spend waiting it is costing you anyway, it would be cheaper to find that air ticket.
Sometimes I don't understand some peoples mentality about this issue. Get your bumb here and then you can check out the place you are working at, look at the apartment you are going to be living in and REALLY talk to foreigners that work there. Its a big win sitaution and the wong-jang-nim(director) will be happy because he doesn't have to shell out for half an airfare and you'll probably get a nice trip to japan(in the form of a visa run). Its a win/win situation for you.
Take my advice, it really will be a lot better |

Makes a lot of sense... and of course nowadays you'll probably have to lower your 2.3 expectations a little....
Waiting around for a job is too much of a painful annoyance to me, and wastes money as well. If you wait a month for that preferred job, you have already spent the equivalent of 2 months savings- its not worth it. |

True, schools are not offering 2.3 now. Take 2 if you can get it. |

good call...
My AEROplane ticket cost $861 return from australia (didnt use the return part though). 100 bucks above a weeks wage in korea.. my ticket was discounted to the max but still, a full price standby ticket might cost ya 2 weeks wages..
the hurdle occurs when ya must travel and stay in hotels whilst looking for that job.... if you dont get something pretty fast the bills can mount up...
if ya have a couple of bucks saved it is by far better to be in korea and look for work as opposed to looking for work on a pc monitor .. |

If I fly here out of my pocket, I will ask for the money back from the hagwon. If not...I'll give them the ol' 'seeya later, I'll go down the street to the next school. See what they're offering.' |

could be an idea ilsan but i'm not sure if any school would be happy with giving you a return airfare and sending you to japan for the e2 run... |

If they need you immediately!!!
It's not that much cheaper to have me wait in my home country. They have to pay for hotel in Vancouver for 2 days. It's a 2 day wait last I heard. |

i'm not too greedy... i would just bite the bullet on that and be grateful i took the time to find a good house and a good job... it is also an adventure on my part so i would expect it to cost me something....
it most certainly increases your chances of getting a good room and a good job if you are here first.. having that option is worth some money too I think...
the whole idea of being in korea to apply, is to find the good jobs and make yourself more attracive to the potential employer...
if he/she is in a hurry to hire, there might be a reason for that and it might also be worth your while to try to find the answer before signing..

For many people, this is the main if not only reason that they choose to teach English in Korea instead of Japan or Taiwan. They can come here with minimal relocation costs.
It was one of the biggest reasons I orginally chose Korea over Taiwan. |

I keep telling my parents that if I don't find something soon, I will just go to Korea and look for a job. My Dad always says things like, "What if you get over there and run out of money before you find a job, and you will end up in a box on the street because Mom and I don't have any money ourselves to send to you if you run out of money. Now I wish I would have just stayed when I lost my job in October instead of running back to the states. I am spending money here, too applying for these jobs and getting nothing in return but the runaround. My Dad has been telling me that I might have to go to some $6 an hour job if I can't get back to Korea. He said that he and my Mom have struggled their whole lives. yeah, I don't want to do that. I am beginning to thnk they had rather see me miserable than happy. Misery loves company, so of course they want to see me struggle like them. Then, I can join the rest of the family bitching about working just to pay rent and bills. My Dad keeps saying I can live with him and my Mom as long as I want. That's just it: I don't want to live with them forever, because who knows when I will ever get married, and I don't want to be like my friend and work just to pay rent and bills. After she lost her IT help desk job 3 years ago all she has been able to find is part-time $7 an hour working at some outdoor retail store. |

Thats a good call and a problem. However, if you don't choose to live in the middle of Seoul there are jobs available quite easily. Also, if you lived here before(as princess has ) then you should have made contacts and hence have somewhere to crash for a bit. |
