Okay, so my g/f is transferring to a uni in Daejeon, and so I just completed initial contact with a half dozen universities there.
I made a little booklet with a plastic cover that included my resume, three letters of recommendation, a copy of my transcript, degrees and passport. I glued a small color photo to each resume.
I went on the internet and got a list of all the universities in Daejeon, then visited all their websites to find out which ones had English departments. Some of them had phone numbers directly for the English department, some didn't. For those that didn't, I learned how to say "Please transfer me to the English Department," and then called the university switchboard.
After confirming which unis were hiring, I visited each of them on Monday of this week (the 26th,) and dropped off my packets. At about half of them, someone sat down with me briefly and we chatted a little. The other half an assistant just took my packet and said someone would call if they were interested.
I've got two years teaching experience in Korea, one year teaching adults, and I have two years university level teaching experience in the USA (a year in grad school and a year after) so I hope I'm competitive.
I wonder how many applicants each university gets? Only a couple of the unis I contacted had ads up on Dave's, but five of the six I visited said they were actively hiring. One had already concluded its hiring process (I was a little late in the game).
So now we'll wait and see, I guess. How long do they usually sit on a resume before they call (i.e. when can I assume a uni isn't going to call at all? After a week? Two?) |

I had one call after 6 weeks... They were clearly desperate.
They had reduced pay from 2.6 to 1.9
They no longer provided apartment, pension or airfare.
They had reduced vacation from many weeks to 10 days.
They never were able to hire anyone, wonder why? |

No pension: Illegal.
10 days of vacation: That's a unigwon, not a uni. |

No, actually, it was a university. They didn't have any affiliated kiddie stuff. They simply said that during university vacations you had to come in every dayd, except for your 10 days of vacation. |
