You mentioned by 8pm you feel tired and take a nap then wake up at 11pm. So I didn't know you worked 4pm-10pm. (Um where does the nap come in?)

I'm delirious. I meant that I fall asleep when I come in from work between 9 and 10pm. Or on Tuesdays (when I wrote this) I finish at 6pm.

I'd love to do 90 minute intensive workouts, but I live in the boonies, so there aren't any gyms around here that I've found. Besides, the walk I do every day takes 30 mins (one way) and is up the side of a mountain. It's hardly a gentle stroll.

Anyway, this is just a temporary problem, which will be alleviated once the thing that I am worrying myself silly about sorts itself out - one way or the other.

Thanks for all the other (far less patronising and useful) suggestions folks.

Next time you ask for help, I guess I won't offer any suggestions.

Seriously, you change your tune everytime I make a suggestion. I gave VERY useful suggestions (no gym in your town - I bet they have a few, you just won't accept that idea...so um...come out and just say so.) Work the afternoons...set a schedule so you do something in the morning. I bet a few days of your "stay up all night routine" mixed with 3-4 hours of some morning activity and you will be passing out at 10pm every night.

Since sleep isn't your problem - you should have stated that before...

Sex/Masturbation tends to work for guys. Not sure biologically how it would work for girls.

I assume they just cuddle their pillow and talk to it. Laughing

On a serious note: I would find the most boring movie and watch it. But seeing as though you are TV obbseo....hmm...

Go for a LONG walk right after work. Get right dead tired.

The Evil Penguin Marriage Offer was only in fun, Emma. Smile

Same advice I gave earlier:
drink warm milk, avoid caffeine after 6 p.m., do not use your bed for anything else but sleep at this point (no reading, eating, or listening to music on it). Turn the heat on, maybe that will lull you to sleep. Set your radio to a spot in between channels to create white noise.
Let us know how you are doing with getting to sleep. I've been up late many nights from worrying a lot and I know sleepless nights are no fun.

Deal with whatever it is that is worrying you. Just deal with it.

Then sleep.

This is entirely contrary to the advice from the Great Wall! (*laugh*)

Yeah yeah, Derrek. Smile As you will read, I said don't do anything like reading, watching TV or eating in bed. I actually read somewhere that the excuse "but I'm too tired to have sex" is crap as the act itself kind of energizes you, at least briefly. Maybe that is for girls, and not for guys though. Who knows. Smile

I can't sleep. NEED sleep!! Sad

I'm currently living this kind of weird twilight existence and finding myself cooking spaghetti at 2am and watching old episodes of South Park, cleaning my bathroom at 3am, and then walking the streets at 4am because I simply cannot make myself sleep.

I get overwhelmingly tired by around 8pm, so I go to bed early, fine. But I keep waking up at 11pm and then I'm awake all freakin' night until around 6/7am, when I finally fall into a numb, exhausted sleep for a couple more hours.

The answer is too obvious. Stop taking those 3-5 hour naps starting at 6pm-8pm until 11pm. Thats the problem.

Just stay awake another few hours.. do something instead at that time.. anything else.. clean your bathroom, go for your walk, do whatever else at that 'nap' time.. and then when you actually go to bed at 11pm you'll be very sound asleep without a problem easily lasting through the night.

Emma,
I'm also a non sleeper and know a few people who aren't. I find my bed time has gone from 1/2am to more like 3/4/5am. However I start work at 10.30 so this really bad.

I often find myself having trouble getting out of bed in the morning and when I finish work at 7.30 the first thing I want to do is sleep. I've tried not sleeping at 7.30 in the hope I'll go to bed earlier but that doesn't work.

I find that I need about an hour of chilling out, tust listening to music or cleaning my house in order to be able to go sleep before 1. I think that any anexity that I have is amplified here.

Booze is bad don't use to get sleep as you may find yourself on the quick route to a booze problem if you use this to fall asleep.

Arrrggghhh!!! The whole point is that even if I am tired I cannot sleep, because I am very worried/anxious about something/one at the moment. Changing my sleeping habits/lifestyle isn't really the problem.

Forget the naps. I am not taking naps. I cannot deal with 'whatever it is'. It's presently out of my hands.

I finally made myself so exhausted I got some sleep. I didn't sleep from Monday through to Wednesday, hence at 11pm my mind finally gave in from anxiety and let me sleep. Hoorah.

I've decided you are a basket case. Your opening post mentions you take naps, that you can't sleep. With each concurent post, you change your story.

Worrying about someone is accomplishing what in your life? Not sleeping for 3 days? Making people like me think you are crazy? Probably effecting your work performance too.

Don't sleep at 8 p.m. Try as hard as you can to stay awake a few more hours. Break the cycle.

DO NOT TAKE NAPS!!!!! Get some Melatonin. It is more natural and I have used it in the past for jet lag. You can get it at Hannam Market. The little shop to your left.

I REPEAT DON'T TAKE A NAP. My two cents.

Good luck,
Jade

Now it sounds to me that you should be seeing someone to cope with your problems. Even if it is only a friend who will listen to you obsess over your problems, maybe that will work. Then take a sleeping pill or two (JUST ONE OR TWO) and try to face the next day. See a pastor or someone else, a higher up if needed, like a doctor, but usually bitching with friends works it all out.

I agree 100%. Anyone capable of taking long naps every evening on a regular basis doesn't have insomnia.

The solution is so simple, just don't take 3-5 hour naps before going to sleep at night. If I were that well-rested before bed, I definetely wouldn't be getting any sleep either.
