"Korea Unmasked" is a good book and a must read for any newcomers here, but it's not a history book or in-depth in anything. An in-depth survey of at least the Joseon dynasty would be needed to have a broad understanding of Korean history and culture, but there is hardly anything in English. Who know's what Koreans are learning about their own History. If you ask a Korean, none will ever bluntly tell you they've even been defeated in a war, but we all know they've had their asses handed to them countless times. There is hardly a proper in-depth history in English of the first western incursions, Yi/Joseon dynasty, Chinese/Korean diplomacy, or the confucion government that lasted 500 years here.

Phooey, it's racial and cultural essentialism at its best written by a know-nothing anti-semite. Rhie Won Bok should stick to his core competancy of being a professor of graphic design and leave the political/social commentary to those who know better. For starters, 'peninsula people are fiery', I mean, come on, somebody obviously forgot to tell the Malays, those from Biak and everyone living in Kamchatka.

Which makes it a perfect read if you want to know how Koreans see themselves. Laughing
