Whenever someone posts a tale of woe vis-a-vis their hagwon or public school, the advice that inevitably comes back is to contact the Labor Board.
I think it would be encouraging to people in these situations if they could read about the experiences others have had when they've contacted the Labor Board to settle disputes with their employers.
So if you agree that a thread like this can be useful and have a tale to tell, positive or negative, please share! |

A few years ago, my second stint at a hagwon (after my first hagwon went out of business and the police evicted me from my apartment my second week here, but that's another story), I worked for 11 months and then got fired. Fired for no reason other than them not wanting to pay their year end obligations.
Anyways, filed with the labor officed. Went to a few meetings and the hagwon owner never showed up. The last meeting (I have a translator there with me) when he actually shows up. The owner and the officer laugh and joke for 10 minutes while I sit there. Then the officer tells me (through the translator) that I am wasting my time coming here. They are never going to side with me and I will never see my 6 million won.
The hagwon owner just sat there looking at me with a HUGE smile. I wanted to kill the fucker. I'm sure the labor dude was a friend, or he paid the him off.
Anyways, that was the end of that. I wanted to get a lawyer but didnt have the cash. I just gave up and wrote it off as my first and last year at a hagwon.
Do I have any tips for those in similar situations??? Nope, chances are you are going to get fucked. |

I went to Labor Board multiple times for my last hogwon, boss never showed. Boss called meetings that I had to go to and never showed. Labor Board found in my favor, so did Court, never got the money.
In short: a waste of freakin' time, it seems. |

I really appalled your self-restraint. I don't know if I could have handled that situation. Just sitting there and realizing you are wasting your time is just horrible. Was there ever a way you could go to that officer's supervisor?(if he had one) |

wow - I had the exact same experience.
only thing was the Labor Board rescheduled a meeting with my boss and me but DIDN'T FREAKING CALL ME
they called someone who used to work in the same office as me WHO I EXPLAINED PROFUSELY HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH ME and the guy didn't work there any more, had no contact with me SO I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW ABOUT THE RESCHEDULING.
I just happened to call the Labor Board and was informed there was a meeting the next day - I couldn't go and at that point said F*CK it, I was SO PISSED and knew it'd never do any good.
sorry about all the caps I still get pissed when I think about it.
Yes, they can cajole and whine etc etc but they are mostly just gutless wonders; totally worthless suckin' up O2.
***Ok, Ok, thought some more, that was in Seoul when that happened.
A few years ago my hakwon was trying to screw me 2 days before I was to finish my contract and I went to the LB. They called them then and there and said go on over to your hakwon tomorrow they're going to pay you. I did, they did, tho it was awful, long story but yes, that time it worked. but that was in one of the provinces, not Seoul. |

Went to Labour several times. Twice with one school, and once with a uni. All three times, Labor ruled in my favour. Only the second time with the first douche required me to go further than Labor: I filed a lawsuit, won it, filed a lien, and got my money after his house was raided and his stuff was repo-ed and sold. |
