Teachers Accused of Getting Bribes From Hagwon
By Kang Shin-who
Staff Reporter
Police have launched an investigation into ``suspicious ties'' between schoolteachers and a hagwon, or private institute director in southwestern Seoul.
The investigation came a day after SBS TV accused some schoolteachers of taking bribes from the director of a hagwon in Mokdong, Seoul, in return for recommending top-class students to it.
The director allegedly bribed about 10 teachers to get help in attracting excellent students. Police said they are tracing bank accounts of workers at the hagwon.
The director, identified as Chung, also allegedly overcharged students. ``Some students paid from 2 million won ($ 2,000) up to 6 million per month,'' a police officer said.
In the SBS program, Chung admitted that he gave some presents or cash to the teachers.
Education authorities are scrutinizing this case as well. ``If the teachers received bribes from the hagwon director in exchange for pushing students to attend it, they will face severe punishment. Also, we will shut down the hagwon,'' said a spokesman from Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education.

Unbelievable. A corrupt Hakwon owner using bribes? What's next?!?!?! Tax fraud? Withholding pay? Tricking parents into thinking their kids are actually learning and advancing? |

you know, what's really fuked up is that when it comes to a hagwon owner screwing over foreigners (English teachers), there's no news about it.
now when it comes to screwing over their own...it's a big deal no?!
watch your back, people!! |

Actually there have been several articles in the KT about it, one or two were even posted here.
And how many foreigners run to the papers with their story?

I am not sure of the problem. A hagwon paid teachers top recommend that school, the kids don't have to go, it is still up to the parents to check the school out right. Provided it is a good school I think I would have taken the money, wouldn't think of it as a bribe
How is it any different from using a doctor to endorse a drug, or an athlete to endorse shoes |

I guess the difference is that a Teacher is a government employee. |

Nail meet head, that's exactly what I was thinking too. Not a teachers place, and as public servants should be above that. |

It's a corrupt nation. No if's, and's, or but's. They can go screw themselves in their collective butthole as far as I'm concerned. I start a new job and I'm going to be the PC teacher and not care. Let them figure it all out. I'll just get my money's worth.
That's what you learn after a while. I show up with my pale face and you pay me. Fk you all, suckers. Give me money.
Eat me. No more concern. Too much of a headache. |

I really hope to goodness gracious it's K-teachers and that no whiteys are involved. If there are whiteys involved in this bribery scandal, you can bet your donuts that the hagwon boss will be painted as the "victim" and whitey will bear all the blame. |

wait a minute tho - I still don't see the problem - weren't they just recruiting students? and getting paid to do so? what's wrong with that? how is that a "bribe?"
they weren't forging test scores or giving extra credit in the classroom; this seems to be something outside of the school. so what if they recommended a hakwon - they're teachers after all - who else should be recommending the hakwon? f*cking grocery clerks?
what a f*cked up education system in this country - |

Ah, maybe if they were recommending the Hawgwan based on merit it wouldn't be a problem. But if you are recommending a specific Hawgwan because you are receiving cash from the owner to spend on booze and hookers that is messed up. |

why?? how is that different from a recruiter seeking employees? and as someone else already pointed out - it's ultimately up to the parents to check it out further. |

Because when you are on the publics' payroll (as a "public servant" no less) you have a duty to the act in the publics' interest as opposed to your own. This is especially true when the people you are supposed to be serving are children. |
