My guy needs to send payments back to Canada for a student loan.

The student loan company will only accept a bank transfer from a Canadian bank, or a money order.

We could maybe send the $100 to my mom by bank transfer, but with the fees on both sides it would cost $24, plus the extra fees to either get a money order in Canada or transfer it once in Canada.

I went to the post office in my (relatively) small town in Ganwon-do and they have communicated to me that they do not do money orders/bank cheques/bank drafts. Apparently Canada does not even accept these!!!!! Is this new????? about 6 months ago, I went to the same place, sent back just under a thousand dollars, and there was no problem at all on either side. What the heck has changed?

Is it a case of "I don't know how to do it, so i'll say it's impossible?"

There is no KEB bank in my town, so that's not an option. The closest one is a 40 min train/bus ride away, and I work at a public school. The Nonghyup Bank won't do it, either.

How the heck do I get a money order in the boonies?!?!?!?

Send Cash wrapped in several layers of a3 paper.

Try and get an international bank card from your bank. If you get one of these then send it home to your mum and have her take the money direct from your korean bank account. She can then deposit it in her account and transfer the money direct from there to the Student Loans place.

Apparently it can sometimes be tricky getting an international card ( i dont have one myself ) but go along with a one of your Korean co workers and im sure you can sort something out.

I have tried to get an international bank card at all of the banks in my town. They have told me it's impossible. Even my co-teachers are baffled at why they won't issue me an international bank card. I have no opportunity to go to Seoul when a Standard Chartered bank is open to get an account and card there. I think this is not an option...

I'm just wondering if Canada is not accepting money orders from Korea. Is there some new rule? Is it malarkey?

I have had IBK issue money orders in foreign currency before. Might be worth a try if there's one a bit closer than KEB. Good luck!

you can send money to your mom through paypal

or western union through kookmin bank and IBK

just wire transfer from any bank, to your mum. there shouldn't be any problems.

I tried to get a money order from the post office here once and they refused to give it to me stating that I can't send money out of the country. I had to go to a bank to do that.

It wasn't until I showed them the address of the Australian Embassy in Seoul, to who I was sending it, that they allowed me to have one.

I was in the position last year where I was working in a Public School and the only way I could transfer money from my bank account overseas was to travel a total of 60+ minutes on the bus (allowing for walking time to the bus stop from school) to a bank which could do the Overseas transfer ... And I normally had to stay at school until the time the bank closed ... What I did was to find the day in the week where I did not actually teach classes at the end of the day and arranged with my school to leave early on that day to go to the bank once a month ... Because it was a similar reason to why Korean teachers sometimes need to take "business" trips in normal school time ... All I had to do was to have the details put into the "business trips" book and have it approved ... My KT helped me to fill it in and spoke to the VP for me ... I had no major problems with arranging this ... because it didn't actually effect my actual teaching time ... It is worth giving it a try

banks in Canada won't want to cash an overseas money order for 100 dollars. I had this problem before. My money had to try a couple different banks before she could get it done. It used to be, i don't know if it is now, that korean banks didn't put some sort of mark on their money orders. One time an inexperienced teller didn't want to cash one of my money orders but a more experienced teller told her to cash it anyways.

I had a cashiers check from a major bank back home and the Koreans would not cash it. One bank said they would need to hold it for a month and then take a 15-25% service charge for cashing it.

It was so difficult to cash I just sent the check back home.
