You were waiting for this one right? After the whole 'definition of beauty' debate I've come to the conclusion that the terminology itself is often a cause of debate. Out of interest what word would you use to describe Johnny Depp?

now THAT is a very interesting question.
Depp when younger was way too "pretty". He was the epitome of the pretty little faggoty boy. (not that there's anything wrong with that, just not my example/epitome of masculine attractiveness.
He is a perfect example of someone who has actually become more "handsome" as he's gotten older. Since he's kept his boyish figure, and he retains his hair.. he's a guy who will continue to look good for some time to come.
(ergo I'd give him a grudging yes on "handsome", though I think Clooney smokes him in this department)
I have another example of dork that with age has turned into a swan (though in fairness Depp was never a dork, just a pretty boy)
but Patrick Dempsey was a major league dork. Look up some movies he did when very young.
Now he's McDreamy - and really is handsome and in his forties too? I think? Once again - kept his figure.. and retained full head of hair.
If a guy can do that.. he can keep going well into his fifties I think.

What I'm finding interesting in these threads is that the guys deemed handsome have clearly defined public personas, that make their look work for them. Johnny Depp wasn't all that appealing until he developed a quirky intellectual vibe, and George Clooney on ER was downright smarmy, but he's settled into sort of a retro movie star persona that works for him.
The women on the other hand seem to be getting judged purely on physical appearances and personality when it exists, seems to distract if not outright detract from her hotness.
I don't get it. |

nonsense. I'm judging Depp and Clooney PURELY on basis of looks and nothing else. Ditto for Dempsey. I don''t know their personalities.
Depp was effeminate pretty boy when he did 21 Jump street. the teen idol.
Clooney always had far more "chiseled", and masculine features. Pitt, even though one could say was "pretty" when he broke through in Thelma and Louise and then also in Legends of the Fall, also had a far more masculine vibe and features on him than Depp ever did.
I'd dare say the rules for male appearance/attractiveness are almost as "standardized" as the ones for women - though in men, roles and perceptions do come into it - example - Russell Crowe is a lot more attractive to women in Gladiator than in Beautiful Mind.
I remember talking to this med student I dated how she thought Russell Crowe was "hot" but admitted if his name weren't Russell Crowe and he wasn't THE ACTOR, he'd look like just another janitor.
anyways - among men, gthere is somewhat of fault line between the majority who deem men like Sean Connery, Harrison Ford, Clooney as the so called male/masculine ideal
Depp is the representative of the other fault line/chasm, the pretty boy/quirky/artist thing with a smaller following. I think the last bond, the Irish guy what's his name is also one of these guys.. not someone who strikes you as masculine and rugged in any way.. and Tom Cruise.

perhaps. but more a matter of style than lines.. the jaw was there, the features simply became more angular as he lost a bit of his baby face and he ditched that haircut.
that's why a lot of men look better in their thirties than twenties. Typically you have the early bloomer and the late bloomers. Clooney and especially Dempsey are examples of "late bloomers".
this rarely happens among women. It's almost impossible to find a woman who looks better in her late thirties or early forties than she did in her twenties.
(I fully grant that societal perceptions come into play here and if male beauty were held to the same 'delicate' standard that female is, then there wouldn't be male late bloomers, just guys who looked better for their age, etc)
But women also physically mature faster and reach puberty faster than boys (though not fast enough to account for this disparity)
'
and look at depp on the left in his 21 JS "Seventeen" magazine days

Johnny Depp is just hot! I remember watching him on 21 Jump Street in grade school and thinking he's cute - but he's gotten even hotter throughout the years. He's simply ageless.
I asked my middle school girls about what American actor they find attractive and they actually mentioned him amongst the teeny boppers. He's the male equivalent of Heather Locklear when it comes to looking young. I swear they have the fountain of youth bottled up somewhere. |

Thus far there are 2 votes for average.
Wow! Some people are really jealous.
Johnny Depp is one of the most handsome men in the world. I would kill my own mother to look as good as he does. Any man would want to have his looks. I could go gay for Johnny Depp. |

I wouldn't call him conventionally handsome, but that's a good thing. I suspect Brad Pitt and Patrick Dempsey would be described that way, and I find them both duller than dishwater to look at. |

There is a lot more scope for a man to be 'handsome' than a woman to be 'beautiful. Someone like Al Pacino for example doesn't have the classic traits of a matinee idol - he is short, he dosn't have a classic profile and he isn't paticulary buff but he has a ton of presence! He is a handsome man whereas someone like Richie Neville from five may be prettier but isn't paticulary attractive.
Men I find handsome (be it from a heterosexual perspective) would be
Benito Martinez, Oscar de la Hoya, the guy who played David Wicks in Eastenders and probably Temuerua Morrison.
In the case of Benitez and Morrison - they both have pockmarked face and are not pretty but they have many positive masculine traits that make them good looking. |
