I completed a P85 tax form before leaving the UK for Korea.

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/cnr/p85_p85s.htm

I would fill one in sooner rather than later and certainly before returning to the UK.

How do you think they'll react if they receive a p85 four years late? Confused

Could it possibly be better to continue with one's head firmly in the sand? I'm worried that, without any proof of income (besides dodgy, sporadic payslips from a hogwan), I'm gonna get presented with a monster tax bill.

I don't think I need to worry about this, since I popped down to my local Jobcentre after quitting work and informed them I'm going back into University, though not specifically in Korea. They didn't ask any questions nor have I received any letters from the Revenue since then, so I guess it's just marked off as 'In Education" regardless of where I'm at.

DON'T TELL THEM!! They won't know and they won't ask. I made this mistake after working in Australia for a while - I told the Inland Revenue and it kicked off an interminable exchange of letters and self-assessment forms that nearly resulted in me having to pay tax on what I'd earned in Oz. It also took me four years to get out of the self-assessment system.

I went to the inland Revenue office before leaving for Asia ( nearly 8 years ago now, YIKES) and they said so long as I was out of the country for the first complete tax year no worries. So (aaaagh, I have actually forgotten when the UK tax year runs now)...say it is April - March... Ileft June 2000, if I had gone back permanently before April 2001 I would have had to declare my income.

Don't forget you can also apply to your bank/building society for any savings there to be paid interest tax free. I had to do it in person though.

Also, if you visit and buy certain itmes you can apply for the VAT back at the airport (providing you fill in the special form at the shop). I brought a laptop over and got it back.

Probably called Steve, mid-thirties, lives with his mum, no girlfriend, has worked there for 10 years without a single promotion or commendation, really fancies the secretary of the boss, even getting as far as singing 'I will survive' at last years Christmas Karaoke party with her and getting to smell her hair a bit in the process, he wears slacks, on non-uniform days he wears a t-shirt that only just covers his stomach, is the guy that when you start work there says 'you don't have to be mad to work here but it helps!' thinking that might be vaguely amusing.

To those of us who didn't fill in a P85 form when first leaving for Korea, can we just do it now and pretend we're leaving for the first time?

Do they check your passport or anything?

It's been six years since I worked and paid tax in England. I doubt I'll ever work there again.

I'd still buy into the scenario of me going into the job centre/benefits office to try and get some dole: "I'd like to sign on, please." "Ah, DV, yes we've been expecting you." "Really!" I've been unemployed for a while" "No you haven't you've been working in Sweden and then in Korea" "No, no, I haven't, I've been sick" "Mr DV we know where you've been, we watch you every day, last week you had some dodgy Kalbi and spent a couple of days on the toilet, you slept with your girlfriend twice last night, she wasn't satisfied!"

Maybe I'm buying into that Big Brother thing.

When we leave Korea, don't our pensions get sent to the UK?

Therefore the Revenue, and the SS will know exactly what you've been doing...

...please tell me I'm wrong...

Without your National Insurance number, I don't see how that could happen.
