I'd really like honest advice that isn't from some disgruntled teacher... still, I might be asking a bit too much there I know... |
Bascially you want loaded advice off someone telling you how everything is going to be great! The 'disgruntled teacher' might be giving you their honest opinion about their realities in Korea - and why not! There are enough prat bosses making peoples lives a misery - They aren't the figment of anyones imagination.
- I know there are terrible schools out there and teachers who aren't happy, - believe me I have had the joy of working at a few. I know Korea isn't going to be completely perfect, I've lived abroad for far too long to ever expect that its going to be. Still, some helpful encouragement would be good.
As for living in the countryside there is no way thats ever going to happen. I've lived in Hong Kong and I'm a city girl through and through. It may not be the 'real' Korea as some people see it, but I'm not even considering anywhere else.
I guess I want to know if its worth it from every factor. Saving money, lifestyle, job satisfaction (if thats not too much to ask!) As for travelling I've lived in Asia and Europe. I know people living in Seoul so it wouldn't be a huge leap into the unknown.
I still haven't decided if I'm going to go yet though. Guess I'm just testing the waters... But there's no way I'm going to just go over there with no job and no visa. If thats the only way to get a decent job then I'm better off just staying in Europe. I really can't be bothered to deal with all that stress. |

If you have survival mechanisms in place and build more as soon as you get here, you shouldn't have a problem. My First year really wore me out but now that I know how to get some of the stuff I want, know the transportation system, the hangul, a few other basics and know other expats I am feeling a lot better. As another poster said, this is a really ridiculous place at times though...
You'll have to learn to shake your head but not let the fact that in the middle of the day there are 50 year olds pissing on the street having a finger put into their ass by a 5 year old stranger while their mother watches and chuckles to herself stay in your mind all day. Just let the stupidity float away. That is your mantra. |

Just talk to your boss before you come. If he speaks good English at least have a good premontion he's a pro and isn't a hack.
I like Korea, beyond all the beef crap and fake controversies it's a nice play to live. |

I think everyone should experience a hagwon their first year. That would put some things into perspective for the backpacker/vacationer "I'm paying off loans" types. |

What is so bad about Korea that makes people wine on about it on these sites? ... |
The wine is something to whine about in Korea. However, if you can live without good wine, you can probably enjoy life here if you stay away from whiners and get a job where you dont teach kids that whine. You should also be able to save enough money to wine and dine with your friends on occasion. Just make sure those friends are the type that don't whine or you too, may start whining about everthing including the wine. |
