I've saved an absolute shitload of dosh in Korea and can afford to sit on my arse and do squat, zilch, niente, nada, absolutely bugger all, for as long as I like. I really need to get out of Seoul's pollution and have a bit of peace and quiet. Also, I've written several songs recently - 1,006 Days (Goodbye Korea) is one - and I'd like to record them professionally (I play keyboard, guitar, bass and sing reasonably well).
So, er, yeah! My plane leaves at 8pm. Don't worry, JH fans, I'll still post in the OT and CE forums. |

I think around 90% of the CE regular posters are former hagwon types who have left Korea. |

I got a part time teaching (EFL) job!
I didn't really plan on teaching EFL again, but I found a great part-time position (one-on-one business English, pay pretty good). The key here is part-time because I didn't plan on working at all, but screw it.
I love my neighborhood
On my doorstep, almost literally, I've an Indian take-away (Goa Balti) and a Chinese take-away (Golden Harvest), both of which are freaking amazing. Also, across the street, there's a large superstore that has European delights such as feta cheese, bratwurst, fantastic meats and cheeses. If you live in Korea, you totally forget what it's like to have stores with aisle after aisle of irresistible products and street after street of restaurants and take-aways with world class cuisine.

I made quite a lot from privates. For most of 2007/8 I taught 5 middle school kids for 2 hours per day, Mon-Fri, for w70,000 (friend prices). Meant I was on 4m per month. I could afford to resign, so did. |

When I graduated university, I had a job offer to work with the Canadian University Press but I turned it down. People thought I was a fool but I really wanted to get away as far as possible from the academic world. I wanted to be in the real world. When I left Korea, a friend offered me a technical training job at his company. I turned that down. Although part of my Korea adventure was to add training skills to my portfolio, I really just wanted to get as far away from teaching as possible for a while.
I liked your initial plan  Take a good long break.

Ain't it nice people can largely understand what you're saying? And the bulk of the people around you don't write off all the exotic non-Korean foods as "too greasy"?

I've found much the same response. Yeah, people don't like you leaving the tribe and getting on with your life. When I moved from Windsor to Toronto, the player haters came out. When I moved from Toronto to Seattle, a new batch of player haters came out.
Anyway, Justin, more power to you. Keep us informed about life in the real world. |
