I'm seariously considering a job in Hongjae, Seoul. I think I have found it on the subway map (spelt Hongje, orange line, between, Muakjae and Nokbeon), but apart from that can find very little information. there were only 3 posts on this board, so maybe they have given me the wrong spelling or it is just a completely uninteresting place?
I have been told it is quite a central place and not too far away from some of the decent areas of Seoul.
Would be cool to hear anything you have to say anyway.

I used to live not far from there--about 10 minutes by taxi--and I wouldn't hesitate to work or live in Hongie even for a second. Lots of open markets, close enough to everything--especially great restaurants in nearby Yeonhee-dong (where 3 ex-presidents lived while I was also residing there). It used to take about 25 minutes on Line 3 to travel from Hongie station to Apgujung station and, as you may know, Apgujung is the centre of it all in Seoul!

Hope this helps a bit.

It's the favorite nightclubbing and designer shopping area in Seoul. They even have named one of their streets "Rodeo Drive" as in Beverly Hills.

There are two major dept. stores, The Galleria and Hyundai, plus all the "best" designer shops (Gucci, etc.) I'm not into the shopping thing, but I used to love going to the bars and some very nice restaurants in the area. I lived in Apgujung for my first 3 months in Korea but had to leave because the tiny apt. I was given turned out to be a dive with cockroaches. Then I moved to Yeonhee-dong, which is not far from Hongje station.

Didn't think it was possible, but I loved that area even more! Cleaner air, quieter, close to Yonsei University and Seoul Foreign School.....

I'm getting homesick just thinking about it!

Anyway, you should be fine in Hongje. Good luck!

Not a bad place to be in Seoul, actually. I lived there when I came over in 93. The main concern would be living in proximity to a subway station. That would make life much easier.

Yup, you're close to Yonsei and HongIk university areas (by cab, at least), and the commute to Jongro, the downtown area, is painless on the subway.

Apkujong? Wouldn't waste my time. Overpriced clubs and stores, terrible traffic, and a bunch of posers.

I currently live in Hongje, but will be moving at the end of the month. I have lived here for 2 years, tho, and will be happy to answer any questions that you have.

pm if you need...

I lived in Hongje for three years. I miss it. It is a very convenient area to live in. You kinda got to be the independent type though as you won't have many foreign neighbors or anything. To me that was a plus of living there though.

Hongje is alright. Not too fond of it cuz some of the environment is a bit drab. It's still convenient to most parts of Seoul though.

The "black market" foods in Yoojin-sangga are decent in their selection, and its the same building as the supermarket, so convenient for all your food needs.

And if you don't like doing your own laundry, there's a Whirlpool landromat across the street (under the overpass) just down from the pizza place. She charges 6000 per washer load, but she dries and folds everything for you. Pickup service within 2 hours.

hey all,

i was considering hongjae also. i assume there are public schools but what about hagwons? i am asking about hagwons because it seems like if you go with SMOE, you won't have a say on where you will be placed. anyone worked at a hagwon there?

Hongje is close to me, I live off of Nokbeon/Eungam. You're very close to Jongno/Gyeongbuk/Insadong and Sinchon/Hongdae. By close, I mean a 10-15 min bus ride to Sinchon/Hongdae and 10 min to Jongno/Gyeonbuk/Insadong. There's some decent hiking in the area as well.

If traffic is light, Hongje-dong is also close to Myeong-dong by bus. Find bus #70? (3? Can't remember) to the Lotte Department Store.

Not a bad area because it's close to other things, but I was never a fan of the area itself.

All said before is true. Traffic is often very bad there. It's a crowded area of the city. Air pollution can be heavy there as well.

Other than that I liked the area. I knew some very nice Koreans there and never had a problem in the area.
