Well, the title pretty much says it all. I am sick and tired of working where I work. It's in a shitty area, the boss is an asshole, and I am forced to work a curriculum that allows for no fun with the kids. There is constant disrespect from my boss, extremely cold co-workers and I'm out in the sticks. I am also working 8 45 minute classes in a row 2 days of the week. We just got a new foreign teacher on Monday, so I doubt they'll be seriously fucked when I leave. I am getting paid on Thursday and am going to ask for my release papers. I've already been offered a couple of jobs just from going in to Seoul yesterday to party, so that will not be an issue. Knowing how my boss is I am trying to think of a way to finagle my release papers out of him. I have been here for 3 months. Worst case scenario I just go home, but I would rather not. Any suggestions?

First, ask for the LoR. If you are refused, apply 'leverage' -

Arrange for a Korean friend (assuming you're not fluent in Korean) to come to your place and start phoning all the students' parents to tell them what's wrong with the school. You should receive your LoR shortly. Wink

You can leave anytime you want. You don't need a LoR. Contracts are broken all the time in Korea. Just don't expect it to look good on your resume.

After your pay day, go to Thailand for a couple of weeks. Apply for jobs in Korea from Thailand. Come back to Korea on a single entry visa and interview with the schools you contacted. In the mean time, stay in cheap boarding houses -goshiwons (less that 200,000 won) for a month until you find a job. Many of these place even provide free rice and ramen.

This way you can actually go to the schools IN PERSON, interview teachers that work in the schools, and actually get a feel for which school is right for you.

If you follow the advice of the poster above, when you fly out of Korea, say to Korean Immigration "Please cancel myvisa, I'm finished." If your visa is not cancelled, and you don't have a letter of release, then you will not be able to get another E-2.

Also, do you have another copy of your CBC? Your original diploma? Does Mr. Bad Boss have any of that stuff?

And as far as calling the kids parents, the director may send the Korean equivalent of Guido and Lefty out to have a talk with you. I'd be careful.

No copies of my CBC, but I do have my diploma. How long would I have to wait outside the country before I could come back? Could I come back and start working while waiting for my CBC to be shipped to me?

Get the release. They can give it to you or keep paying for your apartment and giving you your contractual salary. They promised to sponsor you. A release cancels their responsibility.
