Came across this advertisement for a Filipino teacher. Part time position. No mention of visa requirements or salary. Perhaps the governments agenda of replacing native speaking English teachers with Filipinos and Indians is coming to fruition (although this ad is for a private institute). Let's hope they demand reasonable educational requirements (not like the 2 week course for Korean Americans).

Two things I noticed: 1. it is for a kindergarten job or at least teaching Kindergarten level students 2. No mention of a VISA requirement.

My guess is it is just a cheap kindergarten/hagwan owner not wanting to pay the wage for a native teacher. So he/she is hoping to save a few thousand won by bringing in a Filipino.

Exactly what I was thinking. Yet another way for the shady owners to save some money, and drive the salaries down. On the other hand, if they are qualified to do the job . . .

If they are qualified and have a work VISA, then good for them, because if this owner is trying to get a Filipino to do it. Then he is probably one cheap mother $#$$#$.

There are thousands of Filipinas married to Koreans in Korea. Their number in Korea is in the five figures.

Hundreds of them are working as English teachers. They have a reputation in general as being good teachers.

They don't need a visa and therefore they don't need to fulfill the requirement of being from specific countries.

Some are employed by POEs with salary equal to any foreign teacher.

Most are employed by private schools. Some are employed full time, some part time and some are freelance.

Part time hourly salaries range from 20,000 to 40,000 per hour.

It is not unusual for an experienced Filipina teacher to earn 40,000 per hour.

I know one who earns about 3 million per month.

There have been Filipinas teaching in Korea since more than ten years ago.

The Filipina hostesses are mostly young and single, and they have visas.

They come to Korea on one year contracts.

Then it still doesn't make sense. Why Filipinas? Why not... Russians? The Philippines seems a bit random, no?

Filipinas speak English, which is a valuable asset in the "hostess" profession.

Informative information ULTRA thanks.

I am curious however, how many Philipino English teachers have University degrees from a reputable University (not to say that all Universities in developed countries are reputable)?

For the record, I truly feel that trained Philipino teachers can be as effective as trained native speakers in English. I had been involved in educational training programs in Manila (call centers), and found some very highly educated/qualified Philipino English instructors there.

My concern is more regarding GNP issues. Qualified (or non-qualified) Philipinos will definetly work for less money than qualified (or non-qualified) native English speakers. Based on numerous experiences in Korea, English language institutes will sacrifice quality over loss of money anyday, regardless of one's ethnicity.

I also would like to add that my intention of this post was not to demean or belittle Philipino English teachers. In fact, I have a strong affinity to Philipino culture and community (more so than Korean culture-much to my Korean wife's dismay), and have volunteered some of my company's services to the Philipino Embassy for the betterment of Philipino's living in Korea.

UMMMM I believe you are mistaken. ANY non-Korean needs a visa to here.

If they are working with out a work visa (or a marriage visa) they are illegal, and should be deported.

Personally, I have no problem with Filipino teachers, but I fully support keeping them out as it keeps my wage higher. Considering their per capita income per year is similar to what the average Korean worker makes in a month, they'll work for a lot cheaper than I will.

I called Eugene Lee to ask about how I, as a hypothetical Filipino, could get a job at his institution, and he mumbled something about F-2 (the marriage visa)
He knows thats the only way he can LEGALLY go about hiring someone from there.
Everyone who reads this, give Eugene a call (011 - 9784 - 7716) to ask him about his hiring practices.
He should have to follow the same laws everyone else does.

As someone else noted, there have been Filipinos working as English teachers in Korea for a while. A friend of ours who runs a small hogwan in the country has employed Filipinos for years. He would like to hire native speakers and has the $ to do so, but it's been hard finding someone who would want to be the only foreign teacher at a kindergarten hogwan in the middle of nowhere.
