not one of his better pictures... there are better ones. he's certainly a fellow with well above "average" looks.

but I'm curious if you felt this way about him before his portrayal of young Vader?

there was a certain "intensity" (and masculinity) to him in that role that I am sure a lot of women got turned on by.

The poll numbers seem to come down to the subjective distinction between handsome and sexy. I voted, in the case of Depp, for sexy, though yes, sexiness is something he has grown into. The 21 Jump Street Depp was only sexy to a high school girl/gay boy or older pederast. Now? Yum. Much as Leonardo di Caprio in his youth was just, as the Greeks say, a butter boy. (Though di Caprio hasn't yet grown into anything appealing, as far as I'm concerned. It could happen, but I'm not holding my breath.)

Some young men get around this awkward, butter-boy phase by being sexy. Emilio Estevez is a case in point. I'd have risked jail for a throw with him at 16-17. Other men never get past this phase - Orlando Bloom, for instance. Blech, a judgment that might be helped if he could act.

Handsome to me is, say, George Clooney. Even though his looks do nothing for me, I see him as the classic model for Handsome, a la Charles Heston and Gregory Peck. For me, anyone who is handsome still has some work to do before I find him sexually attractive; he needs to have some personality to go with it.

Sexy is another thing altogether, and seems to me to be far more of a moveable feast, far more subjective, and for me requires nothing added in order to be doable. "I don't care that you have no personality, just shut up and *beep* me. Once. And then go away." From my viewpoint, sexy encompasses all kinds of looks, from slim to pudgy, blond hair to jet black, skin as white as chalk to black as obsidian.

However, Peppermint, your point is well taken. Straight men in aggregate do, in modern times, seem more wrapped around a particular Barbie Doll paradigm, at least in so far as what they objectify as "hot," if not in so far as what they "settle for." I put this down to the herd mentality and the (not total but prevalent) lack of imagination among them.

(NB: the ideal woman of today is a far cry from the ideal woman of most ages past, whereas the ideal of male beauty seems somewhat static through the ages. If you doubt this, look at classical Greek and Roman statues, and depictions of nudes, male and female, since then. The rail-thin - though still big-breasted of course - ideal of womanhood didn't arrive until the last part of the last half of the last century. My hypothesis for the development of the hipless, thighless, waistless woman as an ideal is that it's an expression of the repressed bisexual tendency in modern males, that they seem to wish their women to resemble adolescent boys, subconsiously hankering after the lost opportunities they had when they themselves were adolescent boys. "We two boys together clinging," as Whitman wrote. Sort of a way of having their cake and eating it, too, without ever realizing they even missed the cake. This is just a hypothesis, I could very well be wrong, because there certainly aren't any other examples in modern life of repressed homosexual tendencies seeping out among otherwise completely straight men.)

The Venus de Milo was not big breasted, I think it is fair to say that giant boobs have significantly better fan clubs than they did in antiquity. There was a time when the idea woman was depicted in a heavy pregnant state.

I don't think that would go over so well today.I also think it is interesting that males in the classical period were frequently depicted with small penises. Personally I think this was related to the frequency of homosexuality, a large *beep* is less practical for certain activities, maybe that played a role in influencing the aesthetic of the period.

Your idea about modern female appearing more masculine as a response to repressed bisexuality/homosexuality is interesting, the flapper was one of the most boyish periods for women, and it coincides with the time period when homosexuality was first named and linked with mental illness, before that time men were free to engage in homosexual encounters without fear of being labelled and ostracized. l

I knew nothing of him before Star Wars and yes, I thought he was super hot in it.

One dude who aged poorly: Mickey Rourke. He was always the poor man's Bruce Willis, but his movies have a lot of boobies in them, and as a teenager with Cinemax, I came to appreciate his work. But look at this horrendous face job! It was so intense, it changed the shape of his ears.

I also find it interesting to look at a young Mick Jagger. He was already kinda old before I was born, so it's a bit shocking:

sure you're not confusing Mick with Liv's dad Steven.... of Aerosmith fame? (and she definitely has dad's lips and nose, you can tell immediately who's daughter she is)

Stormy you called your gf's hussies, so I'm assuming they're all a bit older than our favorite elf (nothing wrong with that).
I think there's a poolboy/maternal thing going on there.. but I'm no shrink, so who knows.

Who isn't?

Just thought of another handsome guy....Ben Affleck. There's nothing wrong with the way he looks but he is so unattractive (to me obv.) Maybe it's the lack of a personality impression that I get?

Agreed, his bro, Casey has way more screen presence and persona.

Jeez. This guy, especially with that retarded look on his face, looks like a prize twat. Even Benny Hill in drag looks better!

Now this is what a handsome guy looks like:

For a blast of handsomeness (and wicked humour, considering the actual setting) watch the first 30 seconds of this:

It's a famous scene that some of you may be familiar with.

bogey666, Dolph is handsome & has a great bod but he just doesn't have that 'wow' factor for me. As stated in previous posts, for me there needs to be something behind the handsome facade. Does Dolph have something else that makes you keen on him, or is it only because he looks good? I don't know much about him except that he starred in a couple of dodgy movies - didn't he? Or am I confusing him with someone else? Yes I could google it but can't be stuffed to do so. Easier to just ask you.

I agree. He doesn't do it for me either. I think he looks like a typical meathead. Though you phrased it so much better Very Happy
