I try to have fun with it. I was in a small town, and a woman was on her cell phone, and she looks at me and practically shouts waeguki. I just say Miguk saram ib ni da. What up? Every other day some kids will shout it, sometimes i'll say weguki an i ey yo, hanguk saram i yeh ho. I don't know why. They usually don't know what to say to this, but if you smile they're cool. |

My friend used to shout "5000 won, 10000 won" back at them. Other times he should "il bon sa lam" at them. I just usually ignore it now. Usually I won't give two shits about them. |

If the person is over 7 years old I tend to give off a cool air of superiority combined with a condescending glance and a mild 'Pfttt.." This is because the perpetrator is clearly a peasant. |

Smile. You're the most interesting thing that's going to happen to them all day. Possibly all month. |

A Canadian teacher and I used to wait for the French teacher to walk on campus and then shout, "미국사람!" at him from the window.
It was childish and stupid but plenty fine entertainment. |

waeguki? i don't think anybody who speaks korean would know how to respond to that.
It is, in theory though, a mind-blowingly awesome and original joke. Did you know nobody's tried that one before? Here we were, the expat community, living here in Korea for years and we never thought of that one. Then finally you, Dr. Chuckles and His Giggle Machine, come along and blow us away with your side-splitting zingers. Waeguki! Haha! I'll be chortling all day over that one! Thank you, sir! |

If they are kids, just respond like an adult speaking to a child in a playful manner, the way kids like it. If it's teenagers doing it for a laugh, I either ignore or, if I have the time, give them a laid back lecture in Korean about why it's bad to hear "Hello" all day long from the likes of *you*. |

Just start walking towards them. Or running if you want the super-fast response. |

I have started jumping up and down like a monkey when one kid had practically followed me around the supermarket for 30minutes and kept saying it.
I have called some middle school (high school maybe?) students monkeys when they literally fell out of their set when they saw me and started pointing with their faces twisted like primates at a zoo.
The most common thing I tend to do is just look at them with a confused face with my hands up begging the question "and??????" |

Smile..
Korea is almost racially homogeneous, its not like back home..if some kid if surprised to see a foreigner then thats fine..Hes allowed to make an exclamation..
Its not insulting and it doesnt bother me...I dont really see why people feel the need to hurl insults back at them. |
