One of our female students was injured very badly at the meat riot. According to those with her, they were running away from a scuffle which happened, and she tripped and fell. She unwillingly became part of the fight, and while she was laying on the ground, a police officer slammed the bottom edge of his shield into her face. She lost 4 teeth, broke her face and nose, and requires at least two surgeries and well over a month in the hospital.
Sad situation, no matter what side you're on. I feel this is all the fault of the rich meat producers of Korea who rile students up to protest and hide their profits behind nationalism. |

Tough break. At least she will be financially compensated by the police. Right? |

Do Americans eat the meat of cows over 30 months of age? MOst, if not all the countries America exports beef to, won't accept anything over 30 months - Japan much less. So why should Korea accept the old ones nobody else wants? Pres. Lee made a stupid mistake!

I hear that people are so angry at Lee Myeong Bak that he could well be on the way out. Did you see the cops on TV? Stamping on people - stamping hard onto a girls head and neck.
This is waaaaay beyond simple anti-import-meat. Not just your student. Heaps of people. Heck, it's become a total embarrassment to be at the head when stuff like this goes on under your tutelage.

too bad it happened to her, but she should have stayed where it was safe.
Then again why do need to bash a teenage girl in the face. |

That seems really cold. I figure cops should never jump on people's heads. They're supposed to be trained to not need to do that.
Obviously going to protests should not be taken lightly, but that poor kid got way more than they deserved. |

What do some of these protesters expect? hugs and sunshine? they had ropes tied up to the riot buses and tried to pull them out of the way. They even climbed up on the buses. More than one protester was holding a stick and throwing stuff. They could have chosen to stay in the plaza and keep protesting peacefully. When they did that the cops held back. Once they broke that rule and marched on the police. TS. Expect to get hurt. It's sad to say but the organisers of these protests are probably hoping for this result. It's great PR for them and damning for the cops and the president. |

One of my students today was telling me about a student somewhere that lost her eyes at a protest recently. I know nothing else about the situation. |

Unfortunately, she had just fallen in front of a grandma the cops decided to slam the shield into. She just caught the bottom edge of it as grannie went flying. |

She knew it was going to happen. The government and the police have been saying all month "If you protect, we will arrest you."
Also, violent clashes between police and protesters is nothing new in this country.
She should've stayed at home with the other 48,980,000 Koreans and watched it on TV. |

People should have the right to protest in a democracy. The Korean cops are real tough guys smacking young girls with shields and stomping on their heads. That is going way too far and they need to be disciplined. |
