President Pardons Nearly 3 Million

The measure is widely seen as part of the government's efforts to diminish public outrage over the administration's decision to resume imports of U.S. beef....
This was the third largest amnesty, following the Kim Dae-jung government's pardon of 5.52 million people in March 1998 and the pardon of 4.22 million by the Roh Moo-hyun government in August 2005. |

The guy before Lee pardoned, and the guy before Roh pardoned a buttload of people. Most of these were probably parking/speeding tickets.
So what? |

Things like this are really an embarrassment for Korea and make it look like a banana republic.
Lee's being made out to be the devil, realizes he's gotta do something to at least try to get the public back on side. First he makes a concession on US beef and now he pardons a couple of million lawbreakers.
No wonder no one respects the rule of law in this country. On the few occasions it's actually enforced, it later gets pardoned when the President's having a hard time and wants to get people back on side.
A joke, that's what it is. |

KCCI lobbies for pardons
JoongAng Daily (August 9, 2008)

Korea's five business lobby groups were set to ask President Lee Myung-bak to grant amnesty to the chairman of Hyundai Motor Co. along with other prominent convicted businessmen, an official at one of the groups said yesterday.
Some 100 convicted businessmen were included in a list drawn up by the groups calling for the pardon in the wake of Liberation Day, which commemorates the Aug. 15, 1945 end of Japanese colonial rule over Korea, the official at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry said.
"We will deliver our appeal to the presidential office and the justice ministry today," said the KCCI official. Hyundai Motor Chairman Chung Mong-koo was convicted of embezzlement and breach of duty in February of last year, but his three-year prison term was suspended for five years and he is now free to run the automobile conglomerate.
Most of the convicted businessmen on the list are already on bail after receiving suspended jail terms on convictions including bribery and accounting frauds. The list includes SK Energy Chairman Choi Tae-won and Hanwha Group Chairman Kim Seung-yeon.... |

My brother-in-law got pardoned for drunk driving. Thankfully the insurance companies are not as forgiving as the government and he'll be relying on public transport for the forseeable future. |

I think the whole country would benefit from a little THC, especially the new president and the beef protestors!!!
"Just calm down man and lighten up on all the cops!!!" Protestor
"Just calm down and have a tasty burger!" President |

Is there really a price difference? Aren't prices the same for those (foreigners) that primarily use the English websites? |

President Pardons Convicted Tycoons
By Jung Sung-ki, Korea Times (August 12, 2008)

Cheong Wa Dae announced a sweeping amnesty Tuesday for convicted business leaders, including the head of Hyundai Motor, saying the move will help encourage the business community to redouble its efforts to revive the economy.
Lee granted amnesty to about 2.8 million people, mostly traffic offenders, in June.
Tuesday's pardon was granted on the occasion of the 63rd Liberation Day that falls on Aug. 15 as well as the 60th anniversary of the nation's founding, it said....
In all, the special pardon covered a total of 341,864 people, including 328,335 bureaucrats, 1,902 persons who breached the Election Law, 74 leading businessman and those convicted of minor traffic offenses, according to the Ministry of Justice....
"We welcome the special pardon," the Federation of Korean Industries said in a statement. "Businessmen will make more efforts to create more jobs and boost capital spending for economic growth."
The Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry said the special pardon will help boost transparent corporate governance and ethical management....
The main opposition Democratic Party condemned the extensive amnesty, arguing Lee was pandering to business circles by bending the law.... |

It's not that suprising really. The Hyundai, SK, and Hanwha bosses have all been pardoned. The Hanwha guy was the only one to do any time in jail anyway. They are all too important to be punished for anything. |
