I'm using Bitlord and haven't changed any settings. I went back to America for a few months and hardly downloaded anything. Now that I'm back in super-fast-internet Korea I'm starting to download again, but the stupid thing is downloading at 2-3kb/s. What's going on?

Do a ping test to a few IPs and see what your latency times are.

There are several issues that can come into play:

1) small pipe from the uploader.
2) long latency between you and the uploaders.
3) your ISP is throttling you (not common with DSL but very common with "cable" internet (from your cable TV company)..

IF "3" there are some things you can do (depending on your torrent client).
The easiest are to: turn on encryption in your client software, and change the active port to something above 42500. Then change the port every time you re-start the client.

You might want to stop using bitlord too. Never heard of that, but pretty sure it is banned on all the sites I am on.

Utorrent is the best for windows. I suggest you give that a whirl.

Hmm, I downloaded utorrent, clicked encryption, and it's still slow. Slower in fact, often going less than 1 kb/s.

Did this:

The port is over 52,000.

I'm downloading at home and the box is green. I have no idea what kind of router I have.

It's been running since last night and now is downloading between 6-16 kb/s and uploading between 25-56 kb/s. I swear, when I open the window to check on it, it slows down! What are good settings for limiting ul/dl speeds?

Maybe this cable is just slower than my old one.

Are you on cable (round black wire from the wall to your TV and internet) or some flavor of DSL?

Cable is shared bandwidth (uploads and downloads) with everyone else on your node and if there are more than one serious downloader it can significantly degrade your available bandwidth.

This test was run with utorrent running, seeding at 2000Kbps and uploading at 1000Kbps.

ALSO: Try your test off of Tokyo and not Yokohama and see what result you get.

This test was taken at the same time as the one above and used Yokohama.

The result is similar to yours.

It sounds to me like it's not a firewall issue and there is nothing wrong with your ports. Your upload speed is too high. What happens is your upload stream is overwhelming your download stream and is throttling the connection. Set your upload to a max of 16kb/s or 20kb/s at most. You will notice for most torrents that your download speed will become much better. Once you are finished downloading whatever it is you are downloading you can set the upload speed to a higher amount for the purposes of seeding.

I can upload at around 100kB/s without affecting download speeds so 20 seems a little low

are you using xp sp2? if so try increasing half open connections http://torrentfreak.com/speed-up-your-torrents/

The other thing is what are you trying to download, if there are no seeds or it is a rare file it will be slow, try downloading this
