Which COUNTRIES give CITIZENSHIP at BIRTH?
I know the U.S. use to a long time ago...Ireland as well. But both changed their laws due to rampant abuse of it.
Any other countries out there that still give CITIZENSHIP just for being BORN there? |

The anchor babies are proof of this. |

Well, since the US changed the law some years ago to prohibit minors from sponsoring people into the US and requiring sponsors to prove income sufficient to support the sponsored person, that's pretty much a non-issue now. |

For a recent look at this issue see this professional historian's thoughts on it. |

Apparently the Patriot Act repeals all of the amendments.
Or maybe I'm just a nutty, nut. |

I'm pretty sure the Patriot Act is unconstitutional. But, then again, Bush seems to get away with a lot. |

If you're born in Ireland you still get citizenship. The change in the law means that the parents no longer do automatically, which used to be the case |

I saw this from 2004 though..

The government said change was needed because foreign women were travelling to Ireland to give birth in order to get an EU passport for their babies.
Ireland has been the only EU country to grant such a right.
The poll results showed that 20.83% of voters rejected the proposed changes. The turnout was 59.95%.
Voters were making their decision on the constitutional issue at the same time as they elected MEPs to the European Union's parliament.
To be approved, the government's referendum on a constitutional amendment requires only a simple majority.
The amendment will allow the government to pass a bill that would allow Irish-born children to receive automatic citizenship only if at least one parent is Irish or if parents have been resident in Ireland for at least three years.
Ireland's Justice Minister Michael McDowell said there was evidence of what he termed "citizenship tourism". |

i really want to say almost every country in the world except japan.
you can get japanese citizenship if one of your parents is a japanese citizen.
but there was a case last year of a kid who was born to japanese parents, but they decided not to register him (since he was mentally retarded), and now at 20 or so he has no citizenship. |
