That would depend on your technical needs. What are you looking for it to have?

Yeah I'm in university and use it right now. Usually we just use it for discussion groups and announcements. Having a simple forum, or even a blog (with comments enabled) could accomplish those same tasks more crudely.

Sorry I can't help more. We don't use it for much, and many professors don't use it at all, since we meet in person for regular classes anyway.

Five Eagles --

I have set up a LMS (Learning management system) moodle for my own institution with integrated flash conferencing..... But it isn't easy to do and you'll have to take some time to learn how to upload it onto your own dedicated server + format etc....

There is a good screencast at http://callsig.org/moodle Go to Classroom 2.0 http://classroom20.ning.com for lots of help with moodle -- just search moodle.

Elluminate is too expensive! You can get a free room with a capacity for 3 people only but you'll need a website to host and as a portal.

One other recent option is www.tokbox.com I use it on our community EFL classroom 2.0 and it works well. Though, if you want to share photos, documents and draw, our own FREE flash chat room is the way to go. Teachers can use it to conference with students and teach online. http://host1.gchats.com/eflclassroom/

Lots of tech talk about this there too. Conversely and unfortunately, there are many teachers who just don't see the power of these emerging and existing technologies. They do a little emailing and word documents but really and truly - they are like the old teachers we knew, dusty with chalk and spinning out photocopies, used year after year....... this doesn't cut it anymore -- language learning can be a thousand times more effectively "taught" through technology and networking....

Thanks DD.

Great info.

I already have a website and it's being hosted. We already have a school and with students so I don't mind paying some money as long as it's worth it.

How about adobe? http://www.adobe.com/education/elearning/hed.html

What's the diff between moodle and these other classrooms that you have to pay for? I am going to go over all of this on the weekend, but I would like to hear your thoughts. MM2...what are you selling or are just bsing me again?

Hi there,

As an online student I have used Elluminate and thought it was excellent. I have also used Moodle as a student and thought it was ok, it takes some getting used to but overall it can do all of the things you mentioned in your initial post.

Another one you may want to check out is Wimba, here is a link..... http://www.wimba.com/products/wimbaclassroom/ I am not sure how well it works but I have met some professors who use it as a supplement to their face to face classes and others who use it for their online classes.

Since you're in Vancouver, you'll know of these schools. I know Vancouver Island University / Malaspina, and UVIC, use Moodle.
