Checked-baggage charges are not analogous to "extras" on a car. I am not sure what position you are arguing for here.
I will take another approach: it seems inconsistent to me to object to nationalizing American air carriers on the grounds that that would represent statism, while, at the same time inviting foreign-govt backed and/or nationalized air carriers such as LAN Chile to outperform said American air carriers inside the United States in a so-called free-market.
The phrase "tying one's hands behind his back" comes to mind. |
Let's look at it this way. If Saudi Arabia decided to give you, gopher, a free car, would you view that as unfair? I would accept a free car. Most people would. What if Saudi Arabia decided to give a free car to each and every American? Sucks to be GM and Ford but now every American who was about to buy a new car now has $20,000 to spend on something else. What if Saudi Arabia decided to charge everyone a penny or a dollar? Or $100? A deal is a deal.
If another state wants to drain its coffers giving Americans something free or at lower cost, is there anything wrong with that?
Should America's response be to use tax dollars and match the Saudi "free car" deal and add in a set of steak knives? No. That's foolish.
To wit, Americans shoudn't drain their own coffers trying to provide a service if someone else is going to do it cheaper.
The object of encouraging competition is to lower prices for consumers. How we get the lower prices (short of something unethical like slave labor) is immaterial. |

Makes sense to me. Of course, I'm one of the skinny ones. Probably makes me biased. |

I agree.
I always get seriously pissed when they try and charge for a bag which is a few kilo's overweight, when atleast half the people on the flight weigh 15+ kilo's more than me.
Should be a case of you pay X for a seat+100Kgs (or whatever) anything above that is extra. |

Hair dressers certainly do charge more money for women who have longer hair. Not for cutting usually, but more often for dying, perming, or whatever. If you have super long hair, you pay the price for it.
I am all for this idea, but I think it should be a combination of yourself and your luggage. fat people would have the choice to reduce their luggage some and get under the wire.

Agreed.
But the cost of running a plane depends on the weight of the plane. This is why we can't bring 200kgs of bags. Why should I pay the same fee as somebody 2, 3 or 4 times my weight? They cost more to fly, and therefore it should cost more for them to fly. |
And the barber doesn't cut hair based on length but charges based on a set fee. Taxi drivers don't charge based on weight either. Most people don't weight 3 or 4 times you. And many airline do indeed charge a 4x guy more, for an extra seat.
Fuel is not the only cost built into the ticket. You have many sunk costs like salaries, maintenance, etc.
So putting it all together, yes, they could. But it now takes extra time and equipment to do this. It take training. It takes new software. It pisses off customers. Is this form of price discrimination worth it in the long run? |

I take your respective points and understand the logic when it comes to the seriously obese but what about the basic difference between males and females, tall and short?
I am a 6'5" man and, although I do carry a little extra, I believe my absolute minimum healthy weight would be 210 pounds. What does the average, slim female weigh? 110-150, I guess(?) Are we (they) to discriminate against men in general, the tall in particular, the naturally oversized? |

For all the limitations that 173 cm guys like me have, just 1 advantage of being small would be nice. I guess it's politically correct to let some tubby bastard onto the plane and weigh it down, but short guys can't be pro-athletes, police officers, etc. At least not easily.

Damn, if only I'd realised earlier that my extra height could "easily" have given me a sports career! Think of the millions of pounds I could have been earning rather than mere Korean won!
I could easily list several disadvantages of being tall but I would have thought they were obvious and it's hardly the point of this thread. |
