Can you buy HD Media Extenders in Korea. If so, what the heck are they called? I've been looking all over danawa and Yahoo Korea, but nothing.
I'm looking for something like the SageTV HD media extender:

Vista Home and Ultimate both have Windows Media Center, which does the same thing as Sage TV.
If you don't want to change to Vista, upgrade to XP Media Center Edition. |

Thanks, but I'm looking for the actual hardware for this. Check the link to get an idea of what I mean. |

PopCorn Hour - is the one everybody is raving about.
Google it to find out more. Not sure why it's so good but it is. People I know who have it swear by it now. |

Sorry if I was unclear about what (I think) this is.
It's a piece of hardware that connects to your network. It allows you to stream video from you PC to your TV via your router or wireless connection. |

I know what you're on about but aren't many local brands looking into this technology mainly because its too early and the results aren't as good as a typical media player.
Short of an Apple TV or an Xbox, there are other brands like Linksys, Netgear, Belkin, and D-Link (all network brands so maybe there is a Korean equivalent). But having seen the prices on some of them its no wonder they're that not popular.
Having said that, some media players do let you hook up to the network physically or wireless to access remote PCs (TVIX, popcorn or look up http://www.mpcclub.com/), which is what I think comes to mind for most people.
Popcorn is popular mainly because of its internet browsing abilities (ie. a couple of steps closer to being a PC). |

I still say just go for a HTPC.
Download movies for free. 1080p if you want. Play direct to your TV with HDMI.
Stick a Blu-Ray player/writer in there when they become cheaper.
Play games.
Surf the net.
Stream videos.
Use Skype in your living room.
Watch all those AVI/DIVX files you've burned over the years.
Have hundreds of GB's of movies/TV stored on HDD and ready to go.
Play a DVD/CD.
I'm sure there's more you can do........
A HTPC doesn't have to be expensive. I've budgeted for 800,000. |

@eamo,
The thing is, I already have a nice PC. Currently I have a very long dvi-hdmi cable and audio coax running from my office to the PDP in my living room. I just don't want to have the cables running across my floor.
Thanks for the link blackjack, but a TVIX is not really what I had in mind...though it seems do do serve the same function as a 'proper' media extender. I guess they can stream...or maybe just accept file-transfer from PC.
Rocklee, I think your right. They don't seem to be very popular in Korea.
I've seen some really nice reviews for the SageTV HD extender and it really got me seriously considering...but not if it's going to cost me as much as an HTPC. To play 720p (my set) a 400K PC will do fine, but I really don't need two of them. |

Do you have an XBox?
With XB Stream you can watch video on your TV through XBox.
That is how I watch my torrent movies and shows.

hanguker, the thing with media players like the TVIX is that they don't have to have a hard drive to watch movies as you can stream them via the network. They just help you stream the videos to the TV and you have a remote to control playback.
Next to a media extender this is probably the cheapest option without a hard drive and all you need is a bloody long ethernet cable (cheap). |

That's exactly what I want!
However, the TVIX HD players cost around 400K because they have built-in computers/software/HDD and can be used pc-free. I can build a seperate 720p-capable HTPC for that amount. I'm looking for a device that only streams HD content and is dependent on a PC. Will the cheaper old TVIX players stream HD content (HD important) via my PC?
Cheers. |

Popcorn hour does it. http://www.popcornhour.com/onlinestore/
No HDD needed and a damn site cheaper than TVIX
One friend has one for streaming only another has a 2.5in HDD in it as well. Both rave about them. |

That seems to be a rocking little machine and exactly what I need. I guess they don't retail in Korea, as you have to pre-order them. I'll have to look into the shipping process. Have you had one shipped here? |
