Our school just hired a new teacher to begin next semester. They sort of wanted to hire one of two female finalists, because we are a little man-heavy in out department (although we were open to guys too), but the two female finalists our school set interview times with never even showed up.

They ended up signing a guy to a "temporary contract", but a day later he pulled out for another gig. I always thought the "temporary contract" would burn them in the butt -- hardly binding, and a bit of a turn-off, IMHO.

So they now have a new guy they just signed-on today. Top candidates are always in demand, and can choose from many jobs.

interesting post. i've seen an advert a while back - actually last year - for Inha University asking for female instructors. i'm curious to see what the ratio of foreign male to female elf teachers are at korean universities. i'm guessing that, even though i haven't seen official stats, there are more guys teaching here than women (and in asia or tefl in general).

Does that mean female applicants have lower requirements? Hardly seems fair (but as an underqualified female, I would take one of those jobs anyway).

Most uni teachers are mid- or long-timers, and the majority of mid / long-termers are male, so that only makes sense.

Most University recruiters are brazenly lazy and/or willfully incompetent. Hence most Uni jobs go guys with F2 or F5 visas at the last minute.

We have a panel of around 5 to 7 Korean professors who do the hiring each semester. Our school does not use a recruiter.

I don't think our school cares much either way, but if anything, they would probably prefer to hire E2 if it mattered.

They got burned by an F2 in the past, because they didn't want him to work at another job on the side. Back then, it wasn't in our contract not to , so he told them they didn't have control of his visa and he was going to do what he wanted. He wasn't renewed, partly due to that.

There's only a very small handful of female teachers at my university, apparently it's just because less females apply for university jobs

Do you know many Western women in Korea who:

1. have a master's degree
2. take teaching seriously and are hardworking
3. are not overweight hippies with weird personalities

Not that many, but still quite a few actually.

The reason that there are fewer women in uni positions is that there are fewer women in Korea, and even fewer who stay for the long haul. Most guys who stay here for a long time are usually married to a Korean woman. Most western women find Korean men less than than attractive, both in appearance and attitude. Most women who DO stay find that teaching here is much more attractive than teaching in a school in their own country, mostly due to the safety factor.

Another reason for fewer women is that if a guy gets a divorce from his wife, SHE usually has the kids and the responsibilty for raising them, while the man has the chance to try something else.

Most Western women I have known hate Korea intensely. Some survive, but not many.

As a female coming over to teach in 3 weeks, is there a specific reason that more men than women are teaching in Korea? Here it seems the opposite, more women are teachers than men....
