Hello everyone!!

I am currently in the United States and am looking for public school ESL jobs in Korea. So far I have only sent my resume and photo to a few recruiting agencies. I am waiting on them to get back to me on offers that match my preferences.

I was wondering what else I could do to get public school jobs. I have even actually tried calling schools in Korea when I notice a vacancy but I have been too late on every occassion, seems positions go fast. I know it is easier to do this when I am in Korea, but for someone who is still in the US and cannot network in Korea, any advice or comments would be most helpful.

thank you in advance

Unless you are set on working for SMOE/ETIS, go direct to the program of your choice (EPIK / GEPIK).

EPIK: http://www.epik.go.kr/
GEPIK: http://cge.ken.go.kr/eng/index.asp

Hello Tom thank you for the advice. I visited the GEPIK link you provided and filled out the online application but it only asked for basic information such as name, e-mail address, and start date. Am I supposed to wait for them to e-mail me back or is there something else I missed on the online application? I also wish to apply to SMOE but I cannot find a website would you have the link for that as well?

Again thank you for your time, with much regards...

In my personal experience...

If you want to work for a Hakwon, talk to them directly.

If you want to work for a public school... go through a recruiter who has experience with them. They can tell you what to expect, push when pushing is needed, and help you through the paperwork. Recruiters sometimes can give you a heads up about jobs before they become available.

I personally felt like the recruiters I met were a lot more honest with public school jobs, because there can't be negotiating, which leads to less wheel-greasing, or shmucky behavior... which happens so frequently in hakwons.

I can tell you about my experience. I have been dealing with the Korean Consulate, for an EPIK job. EPIK public school job in the south east region to be exact. I simply got all the paperwork together and hand delivered my packet to the Korean Consulate, it was very easy and stress free. I then had an interview at the Korean Consulate, and now I am waiting for an offer from EPIK. So far the whole ordeal has been easy, and I have had no problems. I at first thought it would be nice to have a recruiter, but I would have had to send my packet to a recruiter, when the Korean Consulate is less than 30 miles from my house. I really could not see any advantages using a recruiter for an EPIK job.

You can also download the application package:

and send it directly to GEPIK.

For SEOUL you WILL need to use one of the recruiters listed on their website.

Thanks for the input everyone...

Dances with wolves:
I also picked up an EPIK brochure when I was getting my F4 visa. I was hesitant to fill it out because I am particular about the location. It is important that I am close to Seoul. Anyway keep us updated on your experience with EPIK and the Korean Consulate-- I am curious to see how things turn out. Would you happen to know if they take GEPIK applications as well?

Cerriowen:
I have sent my information to a few recruiters to test the water and am waiting back to hear from them, I'll keep things posted on what happens

ttompatz:
I have filled out the GEPIK application and will send it soon, and have found a few recruiters on the website provided for Seoul positions and will be contacting them soon as well. By any chance would it help if recruiters already know that I have sent my information (application) to the GEPIK program?

Again everyone thank you for sharing your advice, comments, and personal experiences.

btw, how do I use the quote function??

with much regards,
Chum

I have tried contacting GEPIK directly. I have been working for GEPIK for three years now. For some reason I have not been getting any response. Has anyone else been having the same problem with them?
