First, Ill let you know my situation. I just graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Economics and Geography...I am not by any means qualified to teach at a University.

I don't think I can teach lower level english very well, so gradeschool level was not attractive to me.

My friend hooked me up with a professor who offered me a University job, and I just verbally accepted it even though I know that in terms of other university jobs it is mediocre.

18 teaching hours/week
2 million won/month + 1 extra month pay at the end
20,000 / hour overtime pay
free housing 5 minute walk from campus
free health insurance
free flight
4 weeks of paid vacation

I know in terms of other university jobs this isn't very great, but keep in mind how underqualified I am and the fact that I'd have no chance getting a different university job, which is what I'd really like to do. It was this, or start from scratch.

I haven't done all the paperwork or anything yet, but I fully intend on accepting this job. Please let me know what you think.

I wanted uni at first but now I really think I would prefer elementary ps positions. Just depends on the person Very Happy

How's this possible? Are they gonna pay 100% of your NHIC?

I made one mistake...i think 50% of health insurance is right...i'll find out, but overall that isn't a huge deal. I think 18 hours isn't super high, which is nice. It is a decent University too, so that helps.

I'm scared, nervous, and excited all at the same time. Does anybody have any tips for preparation? I've taught a few lessons at college in the U.S. as a T.A. but that is nothing like doing it every day, especially in something outside my major. I think I am more than capable of doing it though.

Everybody had to start somewhere.

But a University paying 2 million KRW per month is considerably low.

Go for it, where are you gonna get a deal like that in a hakwon? It's a great opportunity for someone with no uni experience.

Good job for you. You just graduated from university yourself, so take getting an offer from a uni here as some luck on your part. A lot of teachers here strive for a university position. It just goes to show that it is who you know sometimes. Any mediocre uni job has to be better than the average first year hakwon job. Good luck if you accept it.

That salary is WAY to low. I hate to say this but you'll probably be in all the K-teachers little gossip chats w/ them pondering how anybody can be stupid enough to accept that salary. 18 hrs is a lot. 12 -14 is what most Professors teach. But, then again, nobody will consider you a "professor".

It all depends WHERE the university is. Where one lands a job in Korea is often the number one decider on happiness. It was for me at least. Unless you are a small town person that doesn't really need to get out much and have a decent night life, you may be miserable in a small city; even if your job is tight.

I stuck out it out for a year in a city of 350, 000. Although I traveled much of Korea on the weekends, my weekdays were simply miserable. I found it very hard to tolerate small town Korea on a long term basis.

As far as your job goes, it is good considering your experience or lack there of. You'll be able to get much better gigs after you get your first year down. Do a good job teaching and you could even pull a few privates if you wanted for some extra loot. Oh wait, that is illegal....nevermind Wink
