|
|
I'm about stay here another year, so I decided I need a credit card, as I have to order transcripts, CBC, and a few other things on-line. I walk into my KB branch, sign up for a Secured card, putting down a 1.0 deposit, then I get a call saying I was denied because my card expires in 2 months. Of course I said, but I need the card so I can stay longer. Apparently they think 2 months is too short a time. I explained that no one would win other than KB if I left Korea, as I paid a 1.0 million deposit. After much trying to explain things to them, I just asked for all my money, and closed my account.
I hear SC or Nonghyup is the most foreign-friendly, is thatright? |

KEB has, or had, secured cards targeted at foreign customers. Give them a try if there's a branch near you. |

Samsung Card will give you a credit card.
Unless you're one of those scumbags who works in a hagwon. |

My Hagwon owner said he would sign for one if I needed it. |

I was really surprised last week when I got my samsung visa card, and it actually worked. No deposit, co-signers, or anything. I work at a public school, so i dont know if that makes a difference. |

I am lucky that my bank card from the US has the master card logo on it, so I don't have to worry about asking for international ATMs and all since I am still connected to the US banking system. That's what many teachers coming from the US should do - get a bank card that has the logo on it. Last time I was in Canada, they weren't having the logos on them. Maybe, that has changed. I am not sure. |

I just got a Samsung Mastercard this week. Actually, I asked for a Visa and they messed it up. It doesn't matter, it's all the same. I also work in a public school and was quite surprised at how easy it was.
To get the card: call 02 2000 8438 and the person will answer the phone in English. They offer Visa, MasterCard and American Express. I don't remember the rate off of the top of my head but I'll post it when I get the chance. |

If you have them take the money directly out of your account (mandatory, I think), and you have the money in your account to pay the balance, there is no interest payment. If you charge a large amount, the cashier will probably ask you if you want to pay in 1, 2 or 3 installments. If you choose 2 or 3, THAT'S where the interest comes in. Sorry, don't know the rate. |

1) go to another branch and ask someone who is not an idiot
2) if similar idiocy follows you, go to KEB, Nonghyup, Shinhan, SC, or Samsung and get a card. |

Actually, there is no interest for "1,2 or 3 months". At least I've never been charged any. Samsung card is great, no need to deal w/ dirty money. It's cash w/out the need to carry any. |

Check your statements again. The charges are not evenly split over the multiple payments. They DO charge you extra for the service of splitting the payment. I went in a couple months back and paid my bill in full... the payments I had on my computer and airfare home were being paid off about 6 months earlier than scheduled, so they had to recalculate what I owed. I saved a little bit on the interest they were charging me over those 6 months. |
