Dear Bob,
Living is hell. Feel the weight of looks here like lead. Smiles belie false teeth, and lies, I think the stamp of which is luscious lips you just want to peel off and eat. But that's another story.
Today, music blasted from the streets. I'd thought it was a Canadian wheat festival-devastatingly dry and droning on and on-'til I found to my amazement, a nice Canadian hooligan hugging a tree.
Said "Eh there man, you like trees?"
"They're sacred, man, like this new-found faceplant called Korea."
"Huh," I said, and shook my feet. Didn't want to step on this sacred ground and besmirch it with my lead(Get it, American lead that the bloody war spread.) So I marched back to bed.
Wondering about the feeling of the earth here, the scent of the trees drifting in from the valleys and mountains, the real heart of Korea palpable now I'm alone in bed, not wanting to feel it.
Your friend,
Adolphous
P.S. And just think, I was thinking about joining the Marines 'til I met this
lovely lady. |

| Where are you? You in Seoul? There are a lot of greens there, mainly this Canadian crowd that does everything eco-friendly, including protesting cow gas. |

I heard of 'em a couple of times. Koreans are wroth, like throwing gas bombs at 'em and giving 'em the Yankeed go home chant and all, seeing odors and bad breath jjust don't matter there.
Theyr'e proud to be who they are. |

I dunno man. Alpha Epsilon didn't write poetry as I recall, just trolled. And Three Dog Night, maybe. But TDN never wrote a poem as accomplished as the OP'ers here. TDN went on a -how long has it been since he disappeared? two years?- poetry improvement binge all this time, scribbling?
Good stuff. |

How can you not like a poem that starts out 'Dear Bob'. Bob the everyman. Cool.
The part 'this newfound faceplant called Korea' I tripped over at first. But I think it means being face-first into something, like Korea, and having it grow on you, like a 'faceplant'. Or just falling face first. Double meaning. Poets do that, litter that way.
The goofiness of talking to the Canadian tree-hugger is great.
Especially after the first line, which talks about 'looks like lead'. And the end of that line which talks about beauty as being a relief/contrast to the racism, yet it's a supeficial commodity that's eaten. Peeled off lips.
The end is fantastic. Korea is a natural place with the Koreans, only a generation or two detached from farming, earthy. The land talks to him. Yet, he doesn't want to trust it.
Perhaps jarred from the mood at the outset of the poem.
My 2 cents. Good poem. Ought to be on a bathroom wall somewhere/carved into the bark of a tree. Yes I'm not a full-time poetry consultant and haven't quit my day job. |
