Seems to me if it's borderline then it might as well be all the way. |

I was diagnosed with it a while back. It's not as bad as it sounds... just basically means you're impulsive and self-destructive and pessimistic, from what I recall. I was kind of fuc ked up back then... perfectly able to function in society, but had a pretty self-destructive pattern. I grew out of it. I'm a bore now. |

If my exboyfriend's exgirlfriend didn't have it, then she sure fooled me. It's devastating.

It's very often passed out as a label by psychiatrists, most of whom love to label people, when they can't justify something worse.
If the label was attached by a non-psychiatrist, laugh. He/she was just being a jackazz, although perhaps a medical jackazz. |

Read - 'The Bell Jar' or 'Girl, Interrupted' for well known fictional accounts.
Go to Itaewon on a saturday night and talk to any English teacher in Polly's Kettle, Seoul Pub etc for real life experience....
....Only kidding....
.... well, kind of... |

My ex-sister-in-law is, no doubt, afflicted with this. Scary stuff. Wonder if anyone's "diagnosed" her? That's gotta be a bitter pill to swallow. It's not like there's a cure. |

Therapy can work. A lot of it is to do with impulse control and having clear ideas about what you want in life. |

Do you know what you want in life?
No
Well imagine you did, what would you want?
I'd want to get up from this stupid sofa and strangle a shrink.

My mother has personality disorder. She comes across as being strange, absentminded, with few social skills. Talking to her is a nightmare and talking on the phone is even worse. Usually conversations go something like this.
MOM: Do you know Jim Smith?
ME: Sounds familiar but I'm not sure why?
MOM: Did you go to school with him?
ME: UHmmm I don't really remember, why?
MOM: Was he older or younger than you?
ME: I don't know, WHY?
MOM: Me and Grandma went to him and his twin baby daughter funeral on Tuesday:
ME: OH? What happened?
MOM: To who?
ME: To John Smilth!
MOM: Nothing that I know of. Why do you ask?
ME: He seems to be dead!
MOM: He is? When did you hear that?
ME: JUST NOW FROM YOU!!! YOU SAID YOU WENT TO HIM AND HIS TWIN BABY DAUGHTERS FUNERAL ON TUESDAY!
MOM: OHHHH no. His wife delivered his babies 4 months too early and they died.
ME: Why didn't you say that?
MOM: I don't know...............You know Dennis and Cindy's son is a thing.
ME: MOM! What the hell are you talking about? A thing? A thing? For god sakes shut up!
MOM: OK.
(Later at the dinner table)
MOM: I had to have endoscopy done last summer. The doctor wanted to look at my intestines.
ME: For the love of god. NO ONE WANTS TO HEAR ABOUT YOU GETTING A CAMERA STUCK UP YOUR BUTT AT THE DINNER TABLE!
MOM: Why???? |

It's unfortunate that your mom is socially awkward. But this is NOT an example that has anything to do with Borderline Personality Disorder.

Hmm, are you trained to treat people who have characteristics of borderline personality disorder? Apparently not. Do you have any idea of what it is like to have borderline personality disorder? Unlikely.
Marsha Linehan (among others) has been at the forefront of a successful developmental treatment approach called Dialectic Behavioral Therapy. DBT has shown to be of help to those who exhibit a variety of borderline personality disorder traits, as well as others who are at a higher risk of suicide and who suffer from other (comorbid) conditions but may not meet full criteria for borderline.
DBT is especially helpful in a group setting, as people who respond to this kind of therapy are typically capable of understanding the flaws and poor social responses in others' behavior, but are often unable to apply appropriate responses to their own behavior or to regulate their mood. Group therapy is also therapeutic in helping those affected to see that they are not alone, and that progress can be made as new skills are learned and as one is retrained in healthier, proactive approaches to relationships and controlling mood.
I realize that few people are happy to be diagnosed with an emotional or mental disorder. However, diagnoses can be helpful in that they give one a starting point of knowing where to begin healing and retraining one's social responses, behaviors, and learning how to exhibit appropriate mood. Those who exhibit the traits of borderline personality disorder tend to lead an intensely painful existence, have unsatisfying social relationships, often struggle with their sense of self, frequently exhibit a number of specific risky behaviors, typically have very reactive, unstable moods, and most of all, exhibit a history of patterns of intense, highly unstable personal relationships. They often have a heightened fear of abandonment and typically their sense of self will be defined by their relationships with others, yet they lack the ability to form meaningful, healthy, long-lasting relationships.
Many, if not most people will exhibit these same characteristics to a lesser extent, especially during adolescence and young adulthood or at other times when under undue stress. It is not helpful to self-diagnose or assume that others must be borderline. It is helpful to be treated by professionals who are familiar with this disorder and who are skilled and experienced in helping those affected to learn positive coping skills. Professionals who have been adequately trained and who will take an approach based on compassion can be a significant source of relief and assistance. |
