I'd like to start a website in Korea. Do you have any hosting company recommendations?

Any specific reason you want a Korean hosting company?? You can host your website anywhere. Are you after a '.co.kr' domain??

AFAIK you need to be a citizen to get a Korean domain.

The wife can handle that end, if required.

I've got a co.kr that is hosted in the states. Why would you use a Korean hosting company? You'll need to be fluent in technical Korean in order to resolve any problems you have as well as understand the control panel.

It's not that hard to understand technical Korean and is quite fun to learn, but can be a pain when you run into problems. However if your not good at fixing things, even in English is of no help Laughing

Interesting to know. So you don't need to be in Korea to have a .co.kr?

How are speeds between here and there? That's a main concern (might be working with video downloads).

There is a latency issue: 7-15ms pings from a local host and 180ms pings from north america. This means that streaming video will have to be buffered to allow for the latency but other than that, host it where you find a host you can work with.

IF you are technically savvy and have a good VDSL or FTTH line available to your home, put it on a computer and home and host it yourself. Web server software is not that complex and the loads on most http servers are not that great either. Unless you are streaming porn you can do it on a dedicated P4 computer with CPU cycles to spare. Just make sure your bandwidth is up to the load.

It is always better to host a site locally than in another country but language is a problem and there are a number of unexpected problems that providers run into (server maintenance, change of management etc) that compromises everything no matter how good your Korean is. I also find that sites hosted in countries other than America tend to load a lot slower.

You're better off hosting in the states where pricing is a lot more competitive and there are more established businesses. Unless your site is producing 100,000 hits per day you won't even notice or care about the speed differences (we're talking milliseconds).

Those was the days when we were still using dial up modems and the few lucky ones had ISDN and could host personal sites. But this only works if the site isn't behind a firewall as most internet providers would probably know about this.

You don't have to be in Korea to host, your server can be anywhere.

Not sure about the domain name though.

I use 3iX for hosting. Cheap and easy to use.

If you are on a DSL or FTTH line, they are not firewalled, port 80 is not blocked and the ISPs don't care if you use it to host a webserver off of. For a small extra fee they can even give you a static IP address instead of the dynamic one that you normally get so you don't have to worry about changing your DNS every time you reboot the machine.

The only ones who kick about your upload stream are the TV/cable companies providing cheap home service because of upstream limits in their technology.

DSL / VDSL / FTTH have no such restrictions other than the capacity of the line to your home (at least in Korea). Yes, in some countries (notably the UK) they actually charge for each 10MB of bandwidth over your paid subscription (but they don't limit your use). Here, it is just a flat fee (my upstream loads run into just over a terabyte per week) and I pay the same flat fee as anyone else with the same line.
