While in South Korea I always felt that the majority of people had some
strange ways of living. I never saw this in Japan or Europe. They were
just plain crazy sometimes, yelling at people and pushing each other. This whole mad cow thing is just plain insane. How can people stay in the rain over and over again thinking they will get mad cow disease? Maybe this is proof that they are not normal thinkers. Those hogwan owners, mothers of children, etc...etc.. seem to have some weird brain patterns that cause strange stuff to happen.

Agreed. Is demographics the right word? Millions of people in a homogenous society, in a small, crowded country, not really familiar with people from the outside: yeah, this kind of isolation could lead to some strange thinking, with no sounding board or reality check for the many who just follow the crowd. This applies to many places no doubt, but as a foreigner one really gets a close-up view of how heavily society influences its members. One of the interesting things about living in a foreign country is this, not beng part of the herd but witnessing it all with bewilderment.

To put it diplomatically, Koreans are very colorful people. I kind of like their quirkiness because I am kind of quirky myself. Unlike the Japanese, they usually don't hold back their emotions.

That being said, there may be something to the whole issue of extreme homogeneity. Back in the states I had some major problems dealing with Koreans in business, though I never made any kind of connection until after I was in Korea. A pattern began to emerge. Any Korean who has spent time overseas and is fairly honest will admit this. After being in Korea awhile I began to notice changes in my personality. I become more impatient, less cordial, ill mannered, and defensive. I saw other Westerners who were basically full fledged ajossis. It IS contagious!

That being said, what that whole experience taught me was that change begins with me. I could return rudeness with rudeness or respond with patience and kindness. Doing the latter definitely seemed to confound many people. I mean, in 150 years will it really matter that some drunk adjossi cut in line or told you off? It was really hard not to reciprocate and become a hater myself.

I am pretty convinced westerners who get caught up in all of it can reach a point of no return.

Is this any crazier than all the people in the US believing in Creationism/ID? How about the British frankenfood scare of a few years ago?

How about the largest recall of beef in US history because a video was released of downed cattle being processed? You think that this is the first time it's happened, or the last time?
