You weren't giving an ultimatum to your boss. you were politely telling your co-teacher she's an idiot. I would have been more direct.

Come renewal time, just insist on the housing allowance, but say nothing more about Pyeongtaek. When they ask where you will get an apartment, just tell them a friend is helping you find a place. When pressed for where, just say you don't know yet and you'll let them know once you actually move in.

The whole point behind having a housing allowance is so you can choose where you want to live and not be stuck where the school puts you. They cannot dictate what you do with your own money.

Where you live is your choice.

You're not a child are you?

Their responsibility as per contractual agreement is to provide you with a housing allowance if you so wish.

Ditto.

Young Frankenstein is one of the handful of reasonable people on Dave's. You can surely trust this poster's advise.

With that commute you will probably not have time for a life during the week. I'm doing a 30 min commute now. I can really only socialize on weekends. It's hard to coordinate with my hogwan teacher friends during the week.

Commuting is better than living out there, weekends are better than nothing, but I'd think really hard about signing up for a year of that.

Outside of Korea I have done longer commutes than the 40 minutes that your move would mean you had ... In fact up to 90 minutes each way is considered within the bounds of what someone can be expected to travel each way .... So on that basis I know that what you are proposing is very doable ... And the benefits you can see will probably make it worthwhile for you ... For all the reasons you gave ...

And I would actually say that a 40 minute commute each way will not stop you from having a life outside of work ... While the 90 minute commute I had for one year teaching in Sydney did stop me from that ... But a 40 minute one I had the next year did not ...

I think that the idea of a "long" commute is something outside of what would be considered reasonable for people who have never lived in places where it is simply the norm (That doesn't mean it is "good" but just the way things are) ...

It seems to me like you have a school setting that you are very happy with and want to continue with .... But a housing setting which already means a 20 minute commute ... but still leaves you remote from the things most important to you ... that you need to spend another year working at a school making what sounds like a very real contribution to the school and the community ... And if spending an extra 40 minutes total a day travelling ... which is less time than sitting down to watch many TV shows ... is all that it would take for you to be able to stay ... and do what you seem to really want to do ... I would say go with it ... And you never know it might help if you do get your KT to realise that what you are talking about is only an extra 40 minutes travel a day ... and all that really means is that some reading that you might do at home you will now do on the bus ... and it really does not have any negative impact on your ability to work effectively ... Actually sounds like it would add to it in a big way ...

But is your difficulty socalising with your hagwon friends during the week because of your 30 minute commute OR because their hours are very different to yours in going into the night time hours ... I could personally see the hours that they work being a much bigger impact on socalising during the week .. than your commute ...

Great story. Yeah, Korea where logic comes to die. You lay out the logic of the situation. But this logic does not reside within the Korean logic of "all employees should be happy for the work we give them". The concept that you don't need friends seems highly at odds with Korean culture. Don't Koreans go everywhere in groups not less than 10 people? If she were in a foreign country, would she be happy to sit in her apartment all day waiting to work the next day? I think she's just trying to find reasons not to have to ask her superior for something and not using the best logic in the process.

I'd love to know how this turns out. Thanks for posting.

Pretty much everyone on the planet manages a social life with commutes up to an hour. You need to explain this further.

It's the face saving nonsense. I'm in a similar situation-I won't name the territory, but very similar scene-except the coteacher was on board, the principal wants to save his shekels.

Have a nice day, and good bye, kimchi and soju swilling donkey-I'm sure you will get another B.Ed Intermediate Senior English and Special Ed qualifications come September.

It's amazing how attached you get to your job when there's been nothing else happening in your life for a while. The same thing happened to me!

But are they nice to you because they really accept you despite the non-Korean blood running through your veins? Or because your school has found it impossible to get teachers to stay so everyone has been told to be really nice to you? And now that you want something, they're back to being their normal selves again. Hmmm...

What you explained reinforces the fact that everything is good here until you ask something in your contract that they don't want to give you. The kicker is ... when they finally give in, they're so pro that you'll end up feeling grateful for it.
