Yesterday in E-mart I bought 4 packages of mushrooms. Why? Well, I love mushrooms and they were 2 packages for 950 won.
So, here is a great recipe for mushroom soup:
Dice 2 large onions.
Cut in small pieces 3 packages of mushrooms
Dice a few carrots. If you do not want to bother, don't use the carrots.
One tablespoon of butter.
1 quart (minus the amount I used in cornflakes and coffee in the morning)
Saute the onions in the butter for awhile. if you want to use the carrot, boil it first) If you do not want to use so much onion, use less.
then put the onions, carrot, mushrooms, and the milk in a pot. make sure the pot is not small or else the soup will boil over (like mine did).
cook it using a low flame. It is done when it is done, maybe 20 minutes. Add salt and pepper. I added some curry powder.
Before any one asks, I do not measure ingredients. This is just a delicious cheap soup for people who like mushrooms.

Thanks but would you by any chance have a recipe for al tang? It's the spicy fish roe soup. I've looked online but only one crappy recipe came up that was put together by a foreigner and sounded really unappetizing! |

Mushshroom soup!! Yum yum! I have better alternative, forget the cooking folks if you live in Seoul, come to Seven Luck Casino, one at Samseong station or the Hitlon Hotel close by Namdaemoon; their mushroom soup there are the bomb, plus a few decent varieties of western and korean food, all are for free and unlimited booze scotch, whiskies, cognac whatever you name it! If you feel unconfortable ordering at dining room pretend or bet low at a table preferably Roullete then order your food from there. Word of advice once you are done with your business immediately leave, dont be a fool that you can some money on the side, better to prepare to lose.
Since I blew my whole paycheck last month, I am gonna go there whenever possible to make up for my lost |

Mushroom soup > free food at the casino > losing all money > mushroom soup > free food at the casion > losing all money > mushroom soup (and so on).
Just avoid mushroom soup. |

If the search function is working, there are several soup recipe threads here at Dave's.
If it isn't, try AllRecipes. You can type in one or two ingredients you want in a soup and it will bring up a bunch of recipes. Hint: Read the recipe reviews from people who have tried a recipe. They give you a lot of suggestions for tweaking that you may not think of yourself.
I'm having some Turkey Noodle Soup for lunch today:
Some leftover turkey from the freezer
(You can use chicken--the bones from a roast chicken make good broth)
1 qt. water (broth from bones is best, but just toss in some bouillion if you don't have a carcass)
1 onion
4 stalks of celery including leaves
1 carrot
handfull of frozen peas
1 T salt (probably none if you use bouillion)
1 t sugar
1/4 t white pepper if you have it; black pepper if you don't
2 c noodles or 1 cup of rice
I throw in a little sage because I have some growing in the window. You can try other herbs if you want.
Toss everything except the noodles/rice in a pot and simmer for 20 minutes or so, then add the noodles and simmer for 10 minutes or so till done; 15-20 minutes if you use rice.

Here's a recipe for a really filling soup, although it tastes best on a chilly day:
Cream of Potato Soup
1 onion
2 slices of bacon (you can substitute some ham lunchmeat if you don't have any bacon)
2 stalks of celery
1 cup of mushrooms
1/4 t of white pepper (or black)
1/4 t of dill (basil instead of dill is also good)
1/2 t of dry mustard
pinch of salt
pinch of garlic
3-4 potatoes
2 cups of beef broth (but chicken broth will do)
2 T flour
1 cup milk
1 cup of peas or corn
pinch of Parmesan
1. Fry the bacon till crispy. Remove the bacon and fry the onion, celery, mushrooms in the bacon grease.
2. Crumble the bacon and add it with the onion etc to the beef broth with the potatoes (cubed) and simmer for about 10 minutes.
3. Remove some of the potatoes and mash them in a bowl. Add the flour, milk and Parmesan, stir. Add the mixture back to the soup and stir till it all thickens.
4. Add the peas or corn and heat. |

Any kind of mushrooms. The cheaper the better.
I do not share gormet reipies, just some easy cheap ones. I sure do not want to spend time cooking when I get home from work. I am tired. So, I cook with what ever I have in the house at the time.
I made coleslaw the other day. Shred cabbage. mix 1 part mayo to one part vinegar. Apple or lemon, what ever you like. Add some sugar. Not alot. just to your taste. I like using brown sugar, but it does not matter. I also like adding raisens and/or diced apples. Mix well, and put it in the refrig. It taste great for a week.
Oh, another great mushroom soup recipie is to take a can of tomato sauce, and add 2 cans of water. Add the mushrooms, or what ever kind of veg. you like, and simmer till the veg are done. Add a tbsp of the powdered beef boulion. Tada...done. If you have left over rice, or maccaroni, add that too. (I also added soome left over oatmeal once, and that was not bad. But do not add oatmeal) |

I bought a hand blender a couple of months back from 20 000 won. It's ace.
Saute onion and garlic. Then chuck in( a few suggestions):
*chopped carrots, broccoli
or
*All kinds of mushrooms
or
*Orange split peas, carrots and broccoli
or
*potato and leek
or
*tomato
cover with water add salt and pepper, boil for ten minutes and then blend. Then you're ready for a super healthy and tasty soup.
If you've a bit more time then:
*Shredded beetroot, diced potato and a teaspoon of vinegar. For a bit of borscht.
All of these are super healthy and super cheap and super easy. Having the broccoli, carrot and lentil blended in the soup is ridiculously healthy. |

Nope if you go to Itaewon then you can pick up most kinds of split peas (2000 won), dahl lentils (2000 won), dried kidney beans (3500 won). You can get chick peas and the red lentils (adzuki beans) in most of the bigger supermarkets. That's why I spend about 60 000 won on these things and they do me for the month.
The split peas are ace because they cook in about 5 minutes. They go great in homemade curries, just to thicken them up a bit. |

Well, I am 4 hrs away and it cost me about 50,000 to get to Itaewon. I have gotten stuff form the foreigh food market next to What the book",and if anyone is interested, they will ship groceries to you for 10,000 won, and for another 5 or 10,000 they willeven pack things in dry ice. That is cheaper then transportation for somepeople. they have all sorts of great stuff, but no split peas. They have basmati rice, lentils (a few kinds). lots of dried beans, and dried fruits, and lamb and duck.
But I have not seen split peas. Can you tell some place where they are sold and I can get one of my friends to get me some when they come to visit? thanks.
I have a bag of split peas from home, and they make a great soup. |
