I'm looking at getting a guide book for either Seoul or the whole of South Korea. Will be living in Seoul, so perhaps it's better to get one just for Seoul? Sometimes the whole country ones have just as much info as the city guides.

The Moons guidebook is incredible......leaves Lonely Planet for dead and has so much more information. the only problem is it was last printed in late 2003 so will be dated.

I would buy a guide to Korea, since Seoul is the capital city it will have a big portion of the book dedicated to it anyway.

I bought the lonely planet and it is not great, but enought to get you started. In most cities the tourist information desks have good maps and information booklets for free, so you could survive comfortably without a guide book.

The lonely planet's thorn tree forum is really good for travel information, I just use that now.

My best buy was the lonely planet's Phrasebook, I do recommend that.

just go online. and read up.

maybe get your self a phrase/language book, that has culture stuff in it.

I can't say you really need a guidebook if you are going to be here to live for a year. You'll meet people and find places to go pretty easily once you are here.

The best guide book I could recommend is that little english subway map that they give you at the airport for free at the information desk. It's hard to find english ones, aside from printing one off yourself.

Really, that and the internet is all you need. but it's your call.
