I can find my USB ports in devide manager but they won't show in My Computer and I can't use them.
I've deleted them in safe mode, rebooted the system, they reinstalled themselves in normal mode.
I've tried updating my windows (I am backwards and am still using windows 2000 because I dislike XP and Vista) but there was nothing to update as I get auto update anyway.
What can i do? |

Get XP or Vista!!!
Seriously. It's been 7 years since I've used 2000, but it's possible that your Win2000 has lost it's drivers for the USB. A specific driver download from the manufacturer of the USB drive might work.
If you want a lot of the plug and play devices, like USB drives, to work reliably then you need to get a more up to date OS. Flash drives and the USB connection were barely invented when Win 2000 came out. |

tzechuk, when you say you delete them did you mean you uninstalled them from control panel/hardware properties or did you actually delete them off the system directory?
You need to physically remove those drivers from the hard disk for Windows to prompt you again for the drivers, otherwise it will keep reverting back to the ones already installed.
If this is a notebook that you're using then make sure you use the drivers from the CD they provide. If not then use the drivers supported by the motherboard of your computer. Just don't use the ones Windows gives you.
USB devices were around when 98 was still widely popular but you always needed drivers for those, 2000 and XP made it possible for plug and play but not always (even my own XP notebook requires drivers for the built-in card reader, modem, network, wireless network and built-in usb hub). |
