My wife is Korean and we are planning to travel to the States for vacation. Does anyone have experience getting a non-immigrant visa (NIV), B1 or B2 type, for your Korean wife/husband? I read about the process on the embassy website and it sounds like you have to prove that you will not just stay in the States once you are there. Has anyone gotten this visa before? What kind of proof was sufficient? Thanks in advance. |

It was actually quite easy for me to get an NIV for my wife. We prepared tons of info ranging from taxes, bank books, asset lists, etc. We also had our work contracts, certificates of employment, letters of recommendation from our bosses, etc.
In the end, they really only looked at the application, asked our plans for our visit, asked what our future plans were for Korea, and a couple other questions.
She got her VISA about 5 days later. No problems at all. The VISA is good for 10 years and it's all good. If you have any questions, let me know and I'll try to remember back to the interview.

Job contracts, apartment lease (chunsae), other significant assets to show that you would return to Korea and NOT remain in the states.
When I applied for a visa for my wife to go the embassy asked for:
itinerary, return ticket, job contract, MY ARC (to show that I was long term and legal here), MY JOB CONTRACT (to show that I would return (and supposedly bring my wife back with me)), proof that were were married.
Basically, since she is entitled to a residence/immigrant visa they just wanted to know why she was only applying for a NIV and have some assurance that we were not just using it to back-door into one and get around the long wait.

T?hanks for the helpful info.
Should I buy our tickets before going for the interview? I thought they told you not to do that as the visa isn't gauranteed, but it sounds like you guys are saying that they might want to see the return ticket as proof that we will really be coming back. |

We had refundable, open return tickets so may have included them without necessarily being asked for them.
Point being was that they wanted proof that I was returning to Korea (and her with me) more than HER returning to Korea.
With you being married, they are more worried about you using the NIV to get around the requirements for her residence visa and less about her overstaying her tourist visa and becoming an illegal alien. |

Anyone happen to have a link where I can download the forms and print them off?
My wife and I are planning on visiting the US in the near future and it would be nice to get the whole process done. I tend to procrastinate when it comes to these things. I appreciate if anyone has a link. |

I'm not Korean but I'd like to share my experience getting an NIV at the US Embassy in Seoul. I'm a Filipino and I applied for the visa in October 2006. Since I'm a stay-at-home mom, I brought my husband's employment certificate and his bank books. They just asked me my purpose in going to the US (told them I was gonna visit my family there). How long will I stay (I said a month) and how did I meet my husband (told the consul I met him in the Philippines)?
Then the consul asked for documents. I showed him my husband's employment certificate and the bank books (which I said are all in my husband's name), which he didn't bother to open.
He took a small piece of paper, stamped something on it and then said he's gonna give me 10 years. My passport (and my son's) were delivered two days later. I was glad the $200 didn't go to waste. |
