I met one of these nasty monster moms while teaching in Osaka.
She was a Korean residing in Japan with permanent residence though, not an actual Japanese. |

I've seen some shocking behavior from middle schoolers because they all know the teachers are powerless to hand out any punishment, even extra homework or a cross remark. Because I was a foreigner I got away with kicking out students who were sleeping, chatting, or playing with an enema bag -- I shit you not -- and after a week my classes ran a lot smoother. |

Have fun. |
Nothing new. Those types of moms have been around for a decade back home. Teaching uni there, I had to deal with them both in class and in residence. It wasn't long before we stopped taking any and all calls from parents. Lots of emails ended up in the bit bucket, too. |

any job where you'd get disciplined or fired for saying "no" to those fruits is a job not worth your time. |

EXACTLY...so true, nothing like having a spoiled 13 year old kid decide the fate of your job. I ADORE all of the Japanese folks that I have met. |

As far as I know there aren't "teacher hunters" demanding the immediate resignation of their child's instructors outside of any school gates. That may be coming in the future, but so far parents still seem to be very respectful and deferrent to Korean public school teachers. |

What are you talking about? The article is referring to the public system. You can't compare a Korean academy system to a Japanese pubilc school system.
I highly doubt Korean public school parents have much say in what the teachers do, compared to Japan, as it's still tolerant for teachers to even hit their children in Korea. |

Raise your hand if you have worked in public education in both Japan and Korea. Oh, only me? |

Congratulations! Maybe you should explain how Korean parents are worse because I don't believe you. |

From what I have seen, the KIDS sometimes run the hagwon...they can make decisions. The kid complains to the parents and the parents (instead of directing the student to work harder) go along with the student's complaint and complain to the hagwon re the teacher. Never mind that the teacher is an adult w/a college degree and the kid is 12 years old.
I have no idea what the schools are like in Japan, I have heard nothing but positives and I absolutely adore all of the Japanese folks that I have met. |
