Immigration looks at each case individually. If you have a record (or if you don't and have never had an E-2 visa), you will have to do the interview at the consulate office in your home country.

I have not heard of anyone with a criminal record being able to renew their contract in Korea since the new E2 requirements went into effect.

The absence of data is not data.

Thanks,

I am going back to Canada after my contract ends. So, I will renew there anyway. I am eligible for a pardon and have applied but, I jus learned that it could take over a year.

I have a really decent situation here, at a hagwon of all places, and I don't really want to give it up. Alas, I may have to.

I may have to channel a little Red from Shawshank at the consulate in Vancouver. "Frankly, Sunny you can just put your stamp on the paper because I just don't give a damn."

Colorado --- Thank You for boldly restating my question: it takes courage...to be so profound.

And what about korean teachers who have been busted for drunk driving and continue to teach in the public school system? That's ok? Double standards.

My boss is going to go over to immigration with my record and speak to someone. He is taking a fax of my record with him. I have until July 9 to figure things out; that is when I fly out of here for a month, or more, vacation.

They actually get moved to another city in the province. Last year two Korean teachers were booted out of my city and had to work miles away. That is their punishment. Move them out of their city, so not really double standards because that'll stay on their record and do you think they'll really be able to work their way up the ladder with that hanging over them?

Point taken.
What I meant to convey is that there is a resounding lack of first-hand data on the subject. Especially if the best we can do on this board is:
"I know someone who..."
Does anyone have first hand information?

Hope he doesn't fire you on the last couple of days for being a criminal and not pay you your severance etc.

I'll let you know. I am in the process of renewing right now. Just finished my health check, and got my CRC notarized at the embassy last week. I have a misdemeanor from 15 years ago on my record. Just in case I'm having my boss write a note telling immigration that the owners are aware of my record and do not feel that it effects my teaching ability. I'm turning in all my documents on Friday.
