Someone in my immediate family is dying of a terminal illness I just found out about and that means I must immediately (sometime this week) go back home for at least a few weeks or months.

I love my hagwon job, recently re-signing for a third year here in a small town in rural Gyeongsangnamdo near Jinju. I would like to return here but they NEED another waygook for the time I am gone. How do I go about finding a short term replacement? Put an ad on Dave's? Contact some organization (is there one? like a temp agency).

I guess I could give up my job and just hurriedly pack everything to leave. But that would still leave the mom and pop hagwon in a lurch and do nothing for me.

My head is spinning. Anyone who has been in such a situation before, or anyone with insight, I could use some.

As far as I'm concerned, immediate family comes before a hogwan job no matter how good it is.
No contest.

Give the notice required in your contract, do everything yo can to find a replacement and be with your family.
Work and Play is a good site for this kind of thing. There are F series visa holders out there who would be able to fill in, perhaps.

Good luck.

I can't. I must go by this weekend. 30 days notice is too long to wait when doctors give my family member 1 to 3 months to live (advanced lung cancer) and family says it could be days or weeks by the look of things.

Hey, good idea. Thanks. I will also put an ad here on Dave's.

I guess someone with an F-something visa is the best bet to help them find a replacement. I know I shouldn't care but I do. I don't like to leave the mom and pop hagwon in a lurch. They have been good to me and I always look for a win-win solution.

Do your best to find a replacement, give a friend the key to your place, and add an extra lock which the school does not have.

Family is much more important.

like most ESLers here, my apartment comes with the job, it's theirs not mine

looks like I might be able to store my stuff in one of the two bedrooms and lock that door, letting a replacement teacher use the rest of the place

it is times like these that I wish I had my own place, under my name with my own key money paid

Many contracts...at least my previous two as well as my third...have emergency leave stipulations.

Do you have anything like that in your contract that you can use in this situation?

Most have limitations...my current limitation is 15 days unpaid...three weeks basically. Most do not grant extended leave options.

But...if you do have something like that in your contract...you might be able to fall back on it here.

If you are planning on coming back, you could do just that. Rent out an apartment before you leave. Just leave your things there for the time being. Or, you could leave your things at a storage unit. My girlfriend says they cost between 200,000 - 250,000 a month.

Thank you all for the kind words. They give strength in a time of weakness. Appreciated.

I paid for an ad on Dave's job board:
http://www.eslcafe.com/jobs/korea/index.cgi?read=31742

Best I can do I guess.

My flight back to Canada is on sunday, Father's Day, apt given it is my dad who I am going to see and take care of.

Your sense of duty and loyalty to your employer is a great testiment to the kind of man your father raised. My family was also struck by lung cancer, twice in a matter of 2 years. I truly wish the best for you and your family.
