Is it just me, or does the TALK Program just seem like a thinly disguised low-paying teaching job?

The contract is almost exactly the same as the EPIK contract, except they refer to pay as scholarship money, and they allow home stays in addition to the possibility of real housing.

I'm not saying it's a bad idea in theory, but rather that it just seems desperate and cheap.

Yup, a month of unpaid 'training', no pension and no severance.
Homestay in the 'boonies'... GOD! Rolling Eyes

It's cheap labour for elementary afterschool programs.

And, amazingly, there are those on this board who can't agree. I guess the turnover is so high here in Korean ESL the majority are newbs who can't see the meatgrinder coming, grunchgrunchgrunch.

One month unpaid training?? The Korean government is even more disgusting and sick-minded than I thought! And how are the kids going to survive the first two months? By spending their own money in overpriced Korea and going into debt?

Basically this whole TALK program is a trap into slavery. The Korean government knows poor naive college kids are gonna take up on this offer. Once the kids are over here, they're not going to have any other choice but to work their asses off or it's grounds for dismissal and pay back their plane ticket fee. Plus with the schools being out in the boonies, these kids might get stranded without much access to help or other options. Hell, it might not even be easy for them to get Internet access out there!

And they have 40% of the workload of a "real" teacher.

Its a glorified internship. What is the difference between this and a company internshipw here they DON'T pay you anything to do the gruntwork.

Though I'd hardly consider it glorified.

One difference is that it's not going to get you any more in life than what you'd get coming here for a year after a degree. I don't think going to Korea for a year after university looks phenomenal on a resume. Doesn't look bad, but hardly phenomenal.

Also, an internship can lead to much greener pastures. Are they offering TALK "scholars" high level teaching jobs upon completion of the program and their degree?

They call the pay "scholarship" money, and hype up the experience aspect, but it's just a lower paying version of EPIK. It's not a bad idea, but their rainbow paint job is fairly poor.
