Well I wonder how this will play out (probably no one will care BUT...). This morning's NY Times, Korea's anti-Beef protests are on the front page.

http://nytimes.com

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/11/world/asia/11korea.html?hp

of course to me the most interesting part of the article is this:

Quote:
But both Mr. Kang and Mr. Choi said the current demonstrations were not anti-American but rather protests against Mr. Lees performance. Many of the demonstrators said they supported a free trade deal with the United States.

Im gonna go ahead and call BS on that one. I mean I am around to the idea that its not JUST anti-American, but to say MOST would support FTA while in the same breath pointing out that the Hyundai Auto Workers Union is involved seems a bit of a stretch.....

Sadly, that article was pretty poor. I like the Canadian article much better.

This quote made me laugh. Are some Koreans so stupid that they would expect a solid economic improvement within 100 days? Even worse -- such a turnaround without drastic and immediate changes?

Quote:

"South Koreans had a lot of doubt when they elected Lee, but they hoped he would save the economy," said Choi Jin, director of the Institute of Presidential Leadership. "But this doubt deepened when Lee failed to demonstrate any immediate improvement of the economy.

There were polls a couple of months ago indicating this is true. It seems the majority of the public was convinced by the arguments made during the debate about the FTA with Chile a few years ago.

Of course every FTA will have opponents since someone's ox is always going to be gored, but the general idea of free trade has been generally accepted in Korea.

Umm I think the events of the last few weeks have proven rather emphatically that "the general idea of free trade" has NOT "been generally accepted in Korea".

Korea seems to be in favor of their exports being included in free trade agreements, but not opening their markets in return. Not exactly the "general idea of free trade".

But wasn't the Korean netizens saying they would boycott American goods due to all of this and the FTA. Again another double standard of the Koreans. They were saying that they would not eat Mc. Donald's, buy Nike, etc as they are American and then people turn around and say, "Oh, well the protest isn't anti-American but more about 2MB". Sparkling logic.

On Bloomberg TV, Bernie Lo just interviewed a guy from the International Crisis Group. As they were discussing the protests, Bloomberg was showing footage of the protests. Mr. Lo was asking the guy from the International Crisis Group what the positives were, saying the protests promote the already existing views that Korea is a xenophobic closed market. The guy from the ICG said that Mad Cow is a scary disease if someone comes down with it. Bernie Lo was basically Rolling Eyes Before the commercial break, the protest footage was peaceful. After the commercial break, the footage was violent with the fights and buses getting destroyed.

Really? You've seen a majority of the public out protesting? I certainly haven't.
