I don't usually reply to many posts, but this one is "special". OP, you are being used and abused. You do know how desperate they are to get teachers here. You do realize that you hold the cards here. YOU have the power. I've been in Korea for years and I've heard of some doozies, but having the teachers come to your aparment and then having you teach them when you are quite sick, well, that might top the list. Unethical on their part and they show you no respect whatsoever. Like another poster said, I wish that I could be in your place because they wouldn't find me quite as easy to deal with. As everyone else has said, you have to learn to say "no" and get in their face a bit, don't back down. Would you put up with such nonsense back home? If not, why do you put up with it here? Good luck with your situation. Be strong and firm.

They are totally abusing your situation and they have no idea how to deal with you. Obviously, they don't deserve a native teacher since they fail to treat you like an actual human being instead of some monkey. You need to quit and find a better position. Teaching at seven schools is bad enough but teaching from your apartment with a fever is beyond ludicrous. Many people teach at public schools, including myself, and I would never take that.

you're getting walked on here, and the only person to blame is YOU... next time, say 'NO' and end the discussion... in fact, don't even let it turn into a discussion... now that you've shown a total lack of backbone, it's time to start laying down the law, or else this will become routine...

What gets me are the teachers who agreed to come to your apartment to have you teach them. Aren't they concerned about getting sick as well? Some Koreans are really retarded! What if each and every one of those other teachers catch what you have? Then they are going to have a real staff shortage! I guess Korea really is the place where common sense and logic come to die.

One of them remarked that the reason I was sick was because I use a candle to make my apartment smell nice. She said that it was stealing my oxygen. Yeah, like A. that is how candles work and b. as if my GIANT OPEN WINDOWS aren't enough to cancel out the candle.

What do you mean "will become"? It already "is".

I would never have let it get this far, but if I had, I would type up my resignation letter immeditely, then keep it at my desk. Next time they screw with me, I'd take it out, march down to the principal's office, slap it on his desk, then march out. They wouldn't let me get halfway down the hall to my office. And if they took my resignation at face value and let me go? Pfft. No big loss. Plenty of other jobs out there that treat me like a human and not a trained monkey. Ook ook.

driftingfocus,

you said in the other post you're not a guy. so my analogy that you're like a girlfriend that keeps going back to her abusive boyfriend is still appropriate. upon doing a search of your past posts...

you've said you are on meds for bipolar and OCD.

you've only been working for a few weeks, so you haven't gotten your first paycheck, right? but you have no money. you have pages upon pages of posts asking for advice on settling in to korea, but it never occurred to you to take the most important advice of all...BRING ENOUGH MONEY to keep you going or bail you out of a bad situation. so you don't want to leave this job because you have no money. not very bright.

you gave this advice to another poster. hmm..nothing like taking your own advice. "Quit and get a different job that respects you as a human being." (from this thread) http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?p=1622348&highlight=#1622348

This forum has become a veritable gold mine of comedic misadventures lately. I don't know whether to laugh or cry though. . .

I do frequently say no, but my supervisor then pretends not to understand, and will do whatever it is anyway. I've discovered that it's easier to just try and compromise.

The first sentence is the Korean way.

Now, the second sentence is not.

Basically, you need to learn to just keep saying no until the supervisor quits the crap. Don't open your door, if teachers show just say no. If you "compromise," you're going to get walked all over. If you want to learn to say "no" the Korean way, you have a few options.

1) Suck air through your teeth. Shake your head a bit, look at the ceiling, sigh to yourself and say, "I think maybe that is not possible." Adding "Let me check with Other Random Person" is optional.

2) Sat "OK, I'll try" and don't do anything different.

In this case, 1 would've be the right choice.

Why bring this up when he took a sick day and is writing to us that his coworkers forced themselves into his house to get tutored in a teachers workshop?
